I'm sure you get at least one of these complaints for your loyal patrons everyday. Some newbies have this conception that this is what EVERYONE does when they go to the gym. In some cases, it can be true, but setting the expectations upfront can minimize the effort spent on correcting these bad behaviors. Here are some effective ways you can condition proper gym etiquette:
1. Signage at weight stations
Head to a local Fedex Kinkos and have them craft up some posters with your logo politely asking your patrons to clean up after themselves in order to create a pleasant and hygienic experience for everyone. Don't assume everyone knows to do that. We know some people will ignore the signs, but at least those new to your establishment will respect it.
2. Spray bottles and paper towels
Having these items strategically located in high traffic areas will encourage your clients to use them. Have a poster with a big red arrow pointing to it so they know it's there and what it's for. Conditioning your clients to do this upfront will set the expectations in the future.
3. Proper gym attire at front door
You can stop this from being a problem before clients step into your facility if you combat it at the front door. Have the rules at eye level so you won't get the "I didn't know excuse" although you'll probably still get it any way. Have your front desk employees check for proper attire as well.
4. Make your own video like this
A great way to brand yourself and have a little fun. Get your team together and cover the no-no's. Have this playing in loop at a few monitors around your facility. People will get a laugh and may even catch themselves in the act. At least it's a way for them to police themselves. Tweet it, YouTube it, Share it. They'll get the message.
