⭐️ This book is hot garbage. The plot is meandering and pointless, the reveal uninspired, and the prose at best workmanlike. I have nothing good to say about this book. I read it for a book club and if it weren’t for the book club I’d have bailed at 40% in and those are hours and minutes of my life I’ll never get back. There was something weird and sexually off putting on almost every page, but don’t worry the authors managed to squeeze something racially regressive on any page that didn’t want to make any female readers take seven showers. I hope someday I love something as much as these authors love describing scantily clad prostitutes. Also current gold medal holder for description of sex that made me the most nauseated this year. 🌟⭐⭐⭐⭐(1/5) Aldous Huxley, known for his somewhat non sequitur and irrationally charged visions of the future, attempts to craft a comprehensive satire of humankind's darker side in Ape and Essence; however, its efficacy in doing so can only be considered an attempt by any serious reading of the text. Written as the first draft of a screenplay which survives its enigmatic author, Ape and Essence reads like a poorly edited college project written by a morally confused film student who believes he has divined revolutionary ideas which are in reality the convoluted fragments of defunct philosophies which he has inherited from an unthinking society. If the reader can get past the painfully stereotypical gender tropes from the 1950s which exist in place of characters, they will need to slog through an actionless plot and a circus-like, accidentally comic rendering of a post-apocalyptic Satan-fearing cult before reaching an impotent end. It is clear after taking a chance on Ape and Essence that Brave New World was a fluke or a miracle, and that at the time this book was written, Aldous Huxley's mind contained only fragments of ideas glued together by the viscous sort of fear which prevents the mind from questioning its conceptions.
