Doodledex - #713-A Hisuian Avalugg

Considering that Hokkaido is actually at a higher latitude than France (and as a result, Sinnoh/Hisui is higher up than Kalos), you would think that the Avalugg here wouldn't look too much different thanks to the colder climate. And yet, Hisuian Avalugg are actually smaller, lighter, and have way less ice on their bodies! (Put some clothes on this beast!)

Since this Avalugg's body isn't strong enough to stride through deep snow unassisted, its lower jaw has gained an iron structure resembling a snow plow, allowing it to plow through snowfields and create its own paths! You would think that this would make it a Steel type.... but nope! Apparently Hisuian Avalugg's naked body is enough for it to be an Ice/Rock type instead of Ice/Steel. (...But seriously, give it some damn clothes!)

Doodledex - #001 Bulbasaur

I had a (potentially stupid) idea... what if I tried to draw every Pokemon as a little challenge to myself? And, y’know... get better at doing digital art in the process. So here’s Bulbasaur! Hopefully I can stick with this....

I also wanted to color some shiny versions for the heck of it! I probably won’t shade these since I’m not brave enough to try yet, and the main point is seeing if I could draw them anyways, so I can have fun with the flat colors!

Doodledex - #706-A Hisuian Goodra

Unlike its pre-evolution, Hisuian Goodra's body isn't completely dominated by its shell, so it's free to move around without awkwardly hopping or rolling. That doesn't mean it's completely outgrown it... a startled Goodra can still completely retract into it!

Although they aren't exactly shy, either. In fact, they hate being alone and can be extremely clingy around the people and Pokemon they like! On the flip side, however, they take being alone less well than Kalosian Goodra, who just cry if left by themselves. The Hisuian variant will instead rampage until its favorite people return!

Doodledex - #705-A Hisuian Sliggoo

While there's no outward change to the Goomy that lived in Hisui, the same can't be said for their evolution! Thanks to exposure to high concentrations of iron in the water there, Hisuian Sliggoo are Steel/Dragon types and have developed a large, round, metallic shell! (And yeah, this technically makes them snails instead of slugs.)

However, unlike normal snails that only keep their organs in their shell, Hisuian Sliggoo holes its entire body up in there, with only its head and arms sticking out! It seems like this would make it awkward to move around... but when it needs to go fast it will retract all the way into its shell, stand itself up on its side and roll away!

Doodledex - #549-A Hisuian Lilligant This is probably one of the more dramatic regional forms, isn't it? I mean, look at regular Lilligant... and then look at Hisuian Lilligant again. It's pretty drastic, right? Lilligant looks like it's wearing a big, cumbersome dress... while Hisuian Lilligant went full on ballet dancer!

The dex theorizes that this is because these Lilligant lived in the mountains, and they needed to develop strong legs so they could gracefully leap around in deep snow to get around easier... but when you stop to think about it, it's weird. Hisuian Lilligant looks like it's "dressed" in less layers! How are they not freezing their leaves off? (But then again, there's no direct evidence for this: Petilil and Hisuian Lilligant aren't actually found in snowy areas in-game!)

Doodledex - #503-A Hisuian Samurott

Oshawott wound up being the Water-type starter for Legends: Arceus, and this is a choice that definitely makes a lot of sense! Despite being the starter of a region based on New York City (and the surrounding area), Samurott is pretty darn Japanese... I mean, "samurai" is literally in its English name! (Of course, this was done on purpose as part of Gen 5's starter theming showing off the diversity of the region, but still.)

Of course, there's no good way to make a Hisuian Samurott more historically Japanese as a result... so it winds up living up more to its Japanese name (Daikenki, which is either "great sword demon" or "great devilish swordsman" depending on how you read it) and has the Dark type added to it! This means that Samurott from Hisui are a lot less bound to honor than Unovan ones, and will often resort to dirty tricks and surprise attacks to win battles! (And this isn't exactly fun to be on the receiving end of... a Hisuian Samurott's attacks are compared to the ceaseless crashing of waves!)

Doodledex - #570-A Hisuian Zorua

Normally, when you get these regional forms, the Pokemon has adapted to its new environment in some way and changed as a result.... This isn't the case here. Zorua who migrated to Hisui faced a very harsh environment, stiff competition from other Pokemon, and vicious attacks from humans... and ultimately, could not thrive under these conditions.

However, its those last two factors that enabled Hisuian Zorua to come back as very vengeful ghosts! Despite that melancholy expression, they hold a very bitter grudge against humans and other Pokemon for what happened to them (...and, technically speaking, their ancestors since they can still breed), and it's this grudge that fuels their illusions in this form.

Doodledex - #628-A Hisuian Braviary

I have to say, it's pretty hilarious that they took such an American Pokemon like Braviary.... and then managed to make it Japanese. It's also funny that literally all they had to do was change it from a bald eagle to a Steller's sea eagle! (Which, by the way, will probably be renamed? I heard something about all birds named after people getting renamed because some of said people... frequently weren't great. I'm fine with that, literally all they have to do to a bird in my neck of the woods is start calling it the jack pine warbler.)

Something about becoming a larger species of eagle (and yes, they're larger than their Unovan counterpart) has made Hisuian Braviary into a Psychic type, which actually comes in handy when it hunts. It uses its psychic abilities to generate shock waves with its cry, which it uses to stun aquatic Pokemon! Once stunned, its prey floats to the surface, where Braviary can swoop down and snatch it with its claws! (Meanwhile, I invite you to imagine this with a Unovan Braviary and a Krabby. (I'm not saying bald eagles/Unovan Braviary are inefficient... but I am saying this wouldn't happen to a Hisuian Braviary. It would probably happen to a Steller's sea eagle, though.))
