Introduction

So my name is Tiffany and I'm 23. I live in Missouri and I'm currently working on my Bachelors of Education at the middle school level with a concentration in science. I've been diagnosed since I was 7-8 years old with ADHD, but I also have anxiety, OCD and a sensory processing disorder. I'm the leader of the tag patrol team, and add in my two cents every once in a while on asks, submits and reblogs! My commentary will have a T on the end of it. :)

This is true. And the chicken came out perfect, nice and moist and everything. It was just bought yesterday, so pretty fresh. Seven chicken breasts, all breaded. 1 cup bread crumbs, 1 Tbs Creole (or Cajun) seasoning, 1 Tbs garlic salt, 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper. Dip the chicken in melted butter (coat) and then roll in the bread crumb mixture. Cook in uncovered baking pan for 50 minutes or thereabouts at 350°F. (Yes that is a recipe.)

And I steamed the asparagus and they were a bit crunchy, but my husband says he likes them like that, so I win there. And then boiled new potatoes with the skins on.

He got a bit of the unmelted butter to put on his potatoes; I scooped melted butter out of the baking dish with the serving spoon. :P

Diagnosis and Teacher Responsibility

I have seen a few questions regarding education and diagnosing ADHD, and I figured I would put my knowledge in. I am an education major, graduating in May with my Associate's degree. 

The DSM-IV states that the symptoms of ADHD must be present for 6 months and effect both the child's education and home life. However, this doesn't start until the child is 6 years of age or older (when heredity is involved, it may be sooner). Teachers must observe any behavior that diverges from the norm for these 6 months, creating a profile of all behaviors noticed. After this point, teachers can contact the school counselor and have a meeting with the parents of the child in question. It is however, up to the parents to pursue a formal diagnosis. 

So here is what I need to emphasize, when a teacher has this talk with the parents they (the teacher) cannot say that your child has ADHD (or any variation thereof). Why? Because legally we cannot. We are not licensed professionals. We can suggest that your child see a psychologist, or psychiatrist. When prompted by the parents such as "Do you think it's ADHD?" or "We've had suspicions too. What do you think?" we can speak. You are asking our opinion as a professional educator and that we can share with you. From what a professor has told me of this, if a teacher says "Your child has ADHD." we are financially liable for the testing of that child (if not more). On top of that, we could be fired from our position and the district as a whole. 

  Whenever you, or your child receives a diagnosis later in life and you wonder why teachers never noticed, please keep this in mind. Unless we are specifically trained for special education, we generally only have a working knowledge of these disorders. Part of the diagnosis process concerns the parents as well. If you are questioning behaviors, go to your child's teacher! Go to the counselor. We would rather have a parent do that, than a child go undiagnosed and suffer. Speaking from experience, it pains us to see a child in pain - and we can't do anything about it.

This is in response to the young lady that feels like a burden: You are by no means a burden. <3 I didn't get my license until I was 19, my permit at 15. Whenever I took the test I couldn't remember all of the rules. My first time I ran a stop sign because I was so focused on everything else! It took me three times, but I did it. Practice, practice, practice. Go in a vehicle you know. Now when I drive, I have music on and it helps me sooo much. You can do it! :)

I'm really starting to think I need a small dose of something to help me through the day, because lately I've felt like curling up and sobbing. I know it'll take a bit to find the one for me, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Well, my favourite is Dexedrine. I did really well on 10mg a day of the extended release or two 10mg a day of the immediate release. It was recommended after Concerta gave me a week-long anxiety attack because a lot of people who have that reaction to Concerta do much better on Dexedrine since it has a smoother comedown etc.

To the Anon asking about ableism and discussing it: In general, if you find it relevant you have the law going for you. I would discuss it with your principal/school board first and foremost, but I see no problem discussing it within the classroom. You could also establish it as one of your classroom rules. Teachers need to know what it is, and we are supposed to be lifelong learners but some people get an attitude when discussing topics like this, so tread lightly - A fellow pre-service teacher

ADHD & Anxiety

Projects I don't want to do, I tend to put off until the last minute. It's not smart, I know, but I just don't want to do them. I'm currently working on a project that is due at 11:59 pm (it is 9 pm right now) and I'm only 3/4 way done.

I can feel the anxiety creeping up on me, tears forming, and my heart beat racing because it HAS to be done, and has to be done NOW. 

Why can't I just sit down and do stuff like a "normal" person?
