Writing Challenge Day 1 Prompt: Frost
The young one had never experienced something so cold. It made her toes shiver, but it was a nice change from the familiar smooth ground she was used to. Everything around her was familiar, but different. The tall ones were covered in it, and it covered the grass. Bending down she gave a cautious sniff. It smelled of water, but it did not look it.
“Kia,” the little one looked up to her sister. “What is this?”
Kia huffed as if she were annoyed.
“The pets call it frost. It comes with the cold.” She walked away her long brown locks swaying with the movement. The younger one stared on with amazement. She looked forward to the day she herself would be filled with such wisdom.
With her newfound knowledge she excitedly jumped on the ‘frost’. With every jump it let out a crunch. The young one let out a yelp of excitement and joy, as her elder relaxed by the door not caring much for the cold the frost emitted.
Kia preferred the warmth of a fire and the comfort of a blanket. The cold brought back memories she would rather not think of. Memories of an old life, and memories of lies and broken promises. Looking at the playful youngster, she silently made a vow that Jess would never know pain and sorrow. Despite how bitter Kia seemed she did truly care for Jess. She protected her as if she were her own. The sound of the door opening and the smell of biscuits broke Kia out of her thoughts. She looked up to the tall brunette who ran his fingers through her coat.
“Come on girls!” He called to them. Stepping to the side he smiled as his two furry companions trotted inside.
