Stein considered his options for a second. He nudged Spirit to sit back comfortably again, tipped his head forward with deliberate ease, then slapped the back of it.

Dope Slap

“It will take us one of your Earth years to-” Blox was cut off by a sharp slap to the back of the braincase.

“No! Earth peoples assume you mean Earth years. They’ll know what you mean without all the filler. Try again Blox.” The instructor was harsh, especially harsh with Blox. The instructor was probably just jealous that Blox could hold a round form, instead of the more solid, sharper edged forms of most Trapezoids.

“But-” A sharp slap with a flat appendage, right in the back of the braincase. Blox bubbled slightly. That one had hurt.

“No buts. Now, try again.” Instructor Flargle gurgled. The instructor was passing from impatience into anger now. Blox shuddered the round form and tried once more.

“Do not be alarmed people of Earth. We are here in peace. We mean you no harm. We would like permission to use your planet’s moon as an exploration base. In exchange we promise to make it habitable for you Earthlings-” Another hit to the braincase.

“Don’t call them Earthlings. They’ll think it sounds stupid. They haven’t unified like we Trapezoids have. Now from the top.” The instructor slumped. Blox solidified in embarrassment. This time Blox would get it right.
