Woody Woodpecker is on a whaler-ship searching for Dopey Dick, the Pink Whale. When sighted, the ship captain sens Wood out in a rowboat to capture Dopey. The whale wrecks the ship but takes a liking to Woody, and off they go across the ocean with Woody water-skiing behind his new friend.

I am really really really proud today to tell you all the news that Dopey Dick (who swam up the Lough Foyle in 1977) has been identified as being W05 ‘Comet’! Thanks in part to this blog/attached facebook giving light to Dopey Dicks sloped eye patches and size. The posted images were noticed by Dr Andy Foote who then with the HWDT were able to successfully identify him as Comet.

Here is what Dr Foote said: “When I saw the photos on Facebook, I noticed that the white eye patch of Dopey Dick sloped backwards in a really distinctive fashion. This is a trait we see in all the West Coast Community whales, but it’s not that common in other killer whale populations. The photographs were all quite grainy, but it was still possible to see some of the distinctive features unique to Comet. I couldn’t believe it – he was already a full grown male back in 1977, when I was just five-years old!” x This means that Comet is at least 58 years old. Possibly older.

Citizen science people, don’t let anyone tell you it doesn’t matter.
