Interview with Honest Athlete Sydney
1 When did you start running?
“I started running when I was a freshman in high school.”
2 Would you consider yourself to be within the division of high intensity athletes?
“No.”
3 During races or among peers have you ever seen people under pressure to cheat?
“Yes. I've seen it happen multiple times.”
4 How common would you say cheating is?
“Quite common; Like 6 out of 10 cases”
5 Are you familiar with blood doping as a method of cheating? If so how common is this?
“I am. For high ranking athletes I feel it's pretty common but it's used as a last resort when put under pressure.”
6 Would you consider blood doping yourself under extreme circumstances?
“Never”
7 What is your moral perspective of blood doping to get ahead in athletic events?
“It's immoral”
8 Blood doping has been equated to altitude training by some; What is your take on this? “Altitude training takes time and the athlete's body creates the red blood cells. Blood doping is basically an instant change and the athlete's body did not make those cells.”
9 Have you ever seen a peer tested for elevated red blood cell count? (aka testing for blood-doping)
“I’ve heard of it happening but it’”
10 Do you think that blood-doping compromises the fair spirit of the sport?
“Yes.”
*Sydney goes to FSU and takes part in the colleges drumline. She loves running and it has become one of her favorite hobbies. She competed in high school sports but now uses running as more of an outlet for stress. Although she doesn’t run marathons, she has spent a lot of time around people who do and thus is familiar with cheating in the sport.
