Taking a Break & Starting Over
If by any chance you follow me on Instagram you know that I’m currently in the midst of a social media break. I’ve been feeling out of sorts of late - unbalanced, demotivated, stressed and to be frank quite lonely.
I work from home 90% of the time, and whilst my bank balance thanks me for not forking out ridiculous amounts of cash for London studio rent; being so isolated all the time has taken it’s toll. It’s funny weird reading my previous post (made over a year ago!) and seeing how I’d already foreshadowed the issues I’m currently facing.
Being a naturally introverted person it takes a lot for me to reach out and take the first step when connecting with people. I’m usually quite happy in my own company, but with #squadgoals 24/7 on social media and the way the world has to know exactly what you’re doing and with whom, it’s easy to feel like if you’re not attending an event every night that you’re somehow boring or out of the loop.
I’ve found the black British creative scene to be very supportive and most of the people I’ve met at events have been so lovely, but at the same time there are cliques and groups and to be honest I’ve never really done well with that. One on one or in a smaller group I’m fine, but at larger gatherings I become wallpaper, I just don’t have the energy to attempt to compete with people for attention. I’d rather be eating or laughing or engaging in a very heated discussion about how Kat Graham was criminally underused on Vampire Diaries. And the struggle is that the bigger DorcasCreates gets, the more I have to market and network and throw myself out of my comfort zone which in all honesty has just be stressing me out.
Basically I’ve felt isolated and disconnected for a while and having to be on Instagram/Twitter all the time because of my business was just too much for me. My life isn’t picturesque, my room/workspace is constantly a mess, my style is terrible, most days I’m bumming about in black leggings and a t-shirt, I’m not exactly the photogenic Instagram ideal. This shit isn’t always pretty.
I think blogging consistently and honestly will help me channel all this anxiety I have and hopefully give you guys greater insight into how I work. It’ll also help me get a handle on my writing which I’ve neglected whilst focusing on DorcasCreates. So apologies in advance if any of this reads weird or rambly!
I’m looking forward to going back through this space in 6-12 months and hopefully I’ll be in a much better headspace. And still be in business!
