There was a drum, a kick drum that was reverberating the space around him. It was thudding through every molecule of his body, his very essence one with this beating thud. It felt like it was pulling his muscles apart, forcing his heart into a new rhythm, and rearranging all his thoughts. And then the beat became sharp, targeting the back of his head in a dull thud that grew greater as he tried to make sense of it.
Images began flashing in front of his eyes, the bright colors of the parade, the laughter, the music, the joy of the celebration, the flying... why had he been flying? He didn’t remember having a broom...
More memories, much fuzzier, came to the surface. Some sort of explosion, panic, loud blasts that sent him flying off his feet, pain... then the drumming all around. With great effort, he fought his way to the surface, his eyelids heavy as he struggled to open them. Everything was blurry for a moment, bright light causing the drumming in his head to crescendo. He groaned, trying to shift and finding his left arm immobilized in some sort of cast.
Turning to asses the damage, he saw the most beautiful sight. He knew her... his mind struggled to work and he conjured images with her face... tent, school, smiles, laughter... but her name escaped him. She was looking down at something, and he managed to croak out the only word he could connect to her, even though it didn’t make sense.
“Door.” His voice croaked and he coughed to clear it, sending another spike of pain surging through his head. He grimaced, his eyes struggling to focus on her as he tried to sit up. “Angel, what happened and where am I? ... and how did I get so lucky to have you at my side?”
