The Dosa Man is the nickname of Thiru Kumar, a food vendor who has been selling dosas from a cart in Washington Square Park in New York City since 2001. Kumar is from Jaffna, Sri Lanka, and he learned to make dosas from his mother. He started his food cart business with just $500, and he has since become a popular fixture in the park.

Kumar’s dosas are made with a batter of rice and lentils, and they are filled with a variety of ingredients, such as potatoes, onions, and spices. He also offers a variety of other South Indian dishes, such as uttapams, idlis, and samosas.

Kumar’s dosas have been featured in a number of publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Time Out New York. He has also won several awards, including the Vendy Award for the best street food vendor in New York City in 2007.

Thiru Kumar, AKA the Dosa Man, has been running NY Dosas, a food cart in Greenwich Village’s Washington Square Park, since 2001. His dosas—which are made from fermented rice and lentils, and stuffed with potatoes, vegetables and spicy sauces—have become an international phenomenon. Thiru grew up in Sri Lanka and learned to make South Indian recipes as a child. After he immigrated to the United States in the 90s, he made it his life's work to sell affordable, fresh and vegan dosas to NYU students, professors and other passerby's.

The Dosa Man

At the request of some of my fans, and my own interest in another visit, I headed up the street to meet the famed Dosa Man and his cart on the southern side of Washington Square Park. 

Thiru Kumar, aka the Dosa Man, moved from Sri Lanka to New York City in 1995 and for the last 10 years he has been running his own small business out of a cart on Washington Square Park. 5 days a week he serves up authentic South Indian food to hungry NYU students and local workers like myself. All of the food is 100% vegan and gluten free, and he specializes in dosas, which are like Indian crepes.

Today I ordered a the Special Pondicherry, a rice & lentil based dosa filled with potatoes and vegetables. The dosa came with a small cup of sambaar, a traditional Indian soup, and on the side I also ordered a samosa filled with spicy potato and peas. Along with the dosa came coconut chutney and another green sauce.

The sambaar was tasty and spicy (in a hot way) and was a great start to the meal as it awoke my taste buds. The samosa, which I've eaten in the past, was also delicious. The dosa I found difficult to cut and maneuver in the tray, and some of the vegetables and and potato fell out. It was also not that hot by the time I arrived back at my desk to eat. By the end, the dosa contents and shell, sauce, and chutney became one big mixture, which seemed like the best approach at the time.

Overall, I was pleased with the meal and the experience. Thiru was happy to hear that I had a food blog and was very appreciative of the fact that I was eating and promoting his food. He is a hardworking and down-to-earth guy, and supporting his honest business was most satisfying.
