A Louisiana resident who identified himself as Marshawn delivered a fiery, emotional speech to lawmakers during a state Senate hearing over redistricting Monday, accusing Republicans of trying to “cheat” Black voters out of political power.

“The MAGA party is the last breath of the Confederacy,” he told lawmakers. “If y’all could give us less than zero seats, you would do it.”

Marshawn’s testimony came as Louisiana Republicans advance a new congressional map after the Supreme Court weakened key protections in the Voting Rights Act.

“There will be no more of your party,” he said. “The midterms gonna come, y’all gonna get wiped out,” he said.

The middle class gets squeezed from both ends and disappears while the elite class accumulates more wealth, more influence, and more protection.

Leaving behind a permanent underclass.

Every empire in recorded history has followed the same pattern. According to British historian Sir John Glubb, who analysed empires from the Assyrians to the British, they all share a remarkably similar lifespan of roughly 250 years. The United States was founded in 1776. In 2026, it turns exactly 250.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anne Applebaum examines this thesis with Steven and explains why she refuses to accept it as inevitable, even as the evidence mounts. Glubb identified six stages that every empire passes through: the Age of Pioneers, the Age of Conquest, the Age of Commerce, the Age of Affluence, the Age of Intellect, and finally the Age of Decadence, defined by internal division, vast inequality, and collapse. Political scientists argue that America is now firmly in the final stage.

Applebaum pushes back, arguing that historical inevitability is itself dangerous because believing the decline is unstoppable removes the willingness to act. She points to Poland as evidence that countries can completely transform their trajectory within a generation. She also explains that the West's complacency after winning the Cold War, the assumption that liberal democracy had permanently triumphed, is precisely what allowed Russia and China to rise while democratic institutions quietly weakened.

A gentle reminder that many evangelicals are the first to condemn any statue of the Virgin Mary or any sculpture within the Christian tradition, automatically accusing them of idolatry, even though they are the same people who proudly and unquestioningly celebrate monuments, statues, and figures of secular figures, politicians, celebrities, and historical figures without the slightest qualms.
