Gavin and I went to the Dothan United Soccer game last night for the first time. This is their 2nd season, but it seems like we are always out of town when they had a home game. It was fun and relaxed, and the weather was beautiful. Tickets were $12, the food and drinks were reasonable, and we sat behind the pep band (two high school students we know play in it).

Such a nice night. They won (2-0), and everything felt homegrown and charming while still being good quality. My favorite thing was this flag that says “bless your heart” and has peanuts on it (Dothan has a well-known peanut festival). They had a small dance team, and there were lots of folks wearing team gear. To note: the crowd was diverse with a good number of folks speaking Spanish—it really seems like a nice slice of the area population.

Southeast Alabama can seem backward and oppressive, but last night was a real bright spot.

One of the best parts of travelling to certain places for work is the food. This week it's Dothan, Alabama. I always stop in the local oyster bar fro fresh raw oysters and baked oysters. They're amazing. Two dozen raw (really he shucked me last thirty) and a dozen baked,are for an incredible lunch.
