Star Wars Rebels Episode Bracket: Round 2
Which is the best Rebels episode?
Season 3, Episode 19: Double Agent Droid
Season 2, Episode 15: The Call
Hear me out: “Double Agent Droid” should have been a musical. We're already halfway--okay, ten percent of the way--there: Chopper and AP-5 do their "Annie Get Your Gun" routine, and of course AP-5 ends with a soulful solo.
I rolled my eyes when AP-5 and the ISB agent both monologued their actions. Even in Star Wars, never the most mimetic of fiction, people don't generally engage in loud, continuous verbal monologue about how they're going to break into a secret base and steal codes while breaking into a secret base and stealing codes.
But do you know where people do do that? Musicals!
So give AP-5 and the ISB agent a duet, cross-cutting between their respective hacking. Give Hera an angry aria about people messing with her droid (Ezra and his "Uh-oh, Hera's mad" can be back-up singer.) I would say "let Chopper finally speak," except giving Chopper human-comprehensible dialogue would instantly void the series's TV-Y7 rating. (You know the famous scene in The Wire where McNulty and Bunk analyze a crime scene while solely using the word "fuck" in different volumes and intonations? Yeah.) So, okay, Chopper can have a tense electronica track.
I don't have any idea what Zeb should sing because I don't have any idea why Zeb is in this episode, but I'm sure someone can come up with something. Wedge can continue his role as straight man: he doesn't sing, he's visibly bewildered about why everyone else is singing, and he's particularly pained when AP-5 walks in on him trying to piss (truly, the best moment of the episode) and bursts into song.
Sell it with enough emotion and absurdity and I'll even buy Hera blowing up the ISB ship by sending electricity through the coms system across the galaxy at the end. "Because it's fucking Star Wars, that's why" is not enough justification for me for this particular violation of the laws of physics, but "Because it's a fucking Star Wars musical"? Sure.
And since it's an episode with absolutely no impact on the overall plot of the show, people who don't like musicals can just skip it.
Ok so
Double Agent Droid
obv a filler episode in a few respects
but it has MAJORLY earned my respect because HOW MANY EPISODES OF STAR WARS ANYTHING CAN MAKE A MUSICAL ALMOST HAPPEN IN UNIVERSE
TWICE
also: josh gad made a delightful little villain cameo with a pretty gruesome death
this episode is bonkers y’all
I am Wedge just trying to pee in peace and life is AP-5 following me in the bathroom to whine about Chopper
Keep your hands off my droid!

WHEN CHOPPER'S NICE...SOMETHING'S WRONG
Here it is finally Part 2. Sorry for the delay...trying to get back in the Choptalk groove before the final season starts. Now this part will be more remembered for a mother’s wrath in Hera...don’t mess with her droid.
I’m hoping by seasons end next year to have ALL EPISODES done. Every digital noise Chopper makes will have a translation.
Up next is “Blood Sisters” of which there is more than one beeping droid and due to demand I will be including subtitles for the other droids as well.
