A Double Take Double Signing

Let's kick off 2017 the right way with a seriously awesome signing for our seriously awesome customers!  It's a Double Take Double Signing!

Meet Stan Chou!  

Stan Chou (pronounced “cho”) has been illustrating all of his life and transitioned to a full-time illustrator after moving to NYC in 2012. He excels at storytelling, and naturally gravitated toward creating storyboards, animatics and comic books. He has a successful track record with clients curated through both the internet and networking in New York City, such as Take-Two Interactive (Double Take Comics), Leath Group, InkWhiskey, HyperX, FUBAR Press, and more.

Prior to 2012, Stan fulfilled his dream of living and working in Japan, both as an English teacher and as a Japanese translator. He received his education in the U.S. and Taiwan, and is happily married with two children.

In his spare time, Stan plays Pokemon Go, watches entrepreneur vloggers on YouTube, listens to mindblowing podcasts across the web, is obsessed with Fangraphs.com and predictive MLB statistics like WAR and FIP, is into retro pop culture like Transformers and Star Wars, is a huge Google geek (sorry Apple), and loves crafting with his two children.

Meet Matt Summo!  He's been the writer for Double Take Comics' series Dedication and Z-Mart.  Outside of that, Matt is a complete MYSTERY but we'll have him in the shop for 4 total hours so come by and find out what he's all about!  (It's gotta be good if he writes Zombie books!)

The signing is from 1pm-5pm.  Stan will be sketching on blank covers and both guys will be signing copies of their books that we'll have for sale!  In addition, they'll have prints and original works of art that you purchase directly from them and support local artists and writers!  

Start 2017 with East Side Mags.  We haven't let you down yet - we think.  :)

Ultimate Night of the Living Dead 10 #1 Issues

Honor, Spring, Medic, Home, Dedication, Z-Men, Rise, Remote, Slab, Soul

Double Take is a new comic publisher headed by former Marvel COO Bill Jemas. For their launch they released 10 new #1 issues in September 2015, all taking place in a shared universe inspired by the classic zombie movie Night of the Living Dead. These inaugural issues all take place in one unassuming Pennsylvania town within about a 20 hour period beginning on Sunday, April 24 1966 at noon.

Beginning at noon, Honor gives us the perspective of a couple of local, small town cops going about what at first seems to be a normal day like any other. Also starting at noon, Spring shows us a bunch of kids and young adults trying to enjoy a sunny day at the lake. Picking up a short time after the events of Honor and Spring, Medic introduces us to stone of the staff, and in particular a skilled surgeon, at the local hospital.

Early Sunday evening, Home looks at what seems to be an all-American ’60s family with the rudest, most foul mouthed little girl you can imagine. This issue especially was a trip to read, mostly because of the strange little girl. Dedication takes place in the local grocery store as it closes and its employees try to clean up and organize the store before being interrupted by some unexpected guests. While the rest of the titles seem to focus on people already in the affected town, Z-Men gives us an outsider’s perspective as the president send in some Secret Service agents to investigate as Sunday evening wears on.

As evening turns to night, Rise was the title that most directly reminded me of Night of the Living Dead, especially since it contains one of the most iconic scenes from the film, recreated almost shot for shot. Remote gives us a glimpse of a brave woman trying to get the 11 o’clock news out to the townspeople from the local radio station. Focusing mostly on the eccentric Dr. Grimes and the film crew following him, Slab shows us what’s being done Sunday night at the local university to find the cause of the outbreak, and ways to contain and stop it.

Picking up early Monday morning Soul shows us the police chief and a group of volunteers trying to get the situation under control.

With many of the books sharing writers and artists, it’s no surprise that there’s a fairly consistent feel throughout all of these titles. Fortunately each title is still able to maintain its own mood and perspective, and quickly develop its own main characters, even though they’re all focusing on essentially the same events. While I liked the writing and art more in some titles than others, each has crisp and vibrant pages easily differentiated by the widely varying viewpoints of each title’s main characters.

As you can tell, Double Take is offering 10 different takes on this classic zombie story, guaranteeing that there’s at least one title that’ll be perfect for any zombie fan. If you enjoy zombies, gore, horror movie, or even just incredibly detailed and complex storytelling, this Ultimate Night of the Living Dead line of comics is a must read!

In addition to the convenient 10 packs like I found at my local comic shop, Double Take also offers their comics in a groundbreaking new digital format which doesn’t simply give you the pages of the physical comic in digital form, it bridges the gap between a comic and a cartoon with an almost animated storyboard format. Personally, I’ll stick to reading the physical copies, but I recommend checking out Double Take’s new style of digital comics, especially if you’re already a reader of digital comics.
