It’s Never Too Late To Change A Life - Indy Reviews Prison Architect

The cells are built, the canteens and showers in place. Add a chapel, a workshop and an exercise yard and they might just get through their sentence in one piece. At least, as an architect, that is something you can control. Riots and fires not so much.

Prison Architect is available with Xbox Games With Gold this month. It does pretty much as it says on the tin. You build prisons. However it’s a lot more than that. Although you are merely the contractor building the prison there is a lot you have to consider. Not only are there security concerns, you have to worry about the wellbeing of the men under your care. Or you don’t I guess. Depends on what you’re concentrating on? Everything has a cost of course...

If you’ve played any “Tycoon”-esque games you know how this works. Create facilities to house and feed inmates, provide education, medical treatment and psychiatric care. And of course you need to hire staff to look after the inmates in your care. To afford all of the staff and facilities you need you can apply for government grants as well as making a small profit on the prisoners you care for. I’m assuming it’s based on an American prison system. In the last story mission Bootstraps one of the victory conditions is to make sure you have a net profit running the prison.

You can tell it’s based on an American system because capital punishment is an option. Not an option I’d take, but the first prison story does involve creating an execution suite and killing a prisoner. The interesting bit is the fact it brings in some of the ethical quandries about using capital punishment. A chaplain points out that if the person was caught 100 miles north they wouldn’t be facing their end but rather life imprisonment. Really makes you think. I’ve never been one for capital punishment though.

Honestly I preferred the Prison Stories campaign to the sandbox prison building. Henry Morgan’s redemption through a kinder prison environment was beautiful. From being actively suicidal to having that most precious commodity - hope. It’s amazing what a difference a clean uniform and seeing your family’s face once in a while can do for morale. I think it can be all too easy to dehumanise people in the care of the prison system. The hardened wardens and security staff seemed to forget that inmates are people too, and everyone just needs a bit of kindness now and then. No matter what you may have done in your life, you still deserve to be treated with the barest respect. It’s something we could all do with remembering. Oh and that running a prison that is “profitable” at the expense of treating inmates with basic respect is a horrifying disgusting thing. Don’t do this.
