While Scritti Politti are the sort of band that would somehow get the greatest jazz musician to play a trumpet on their single, one must know that’s not the surprising thing they did. The group’s opus basically consists of such astonishements, so if I tell you their early EPs express their incredible erudition with a post-punk sound that was closer to the punk part of the phrase, you would only nod, saying that’s them. Then again, they’re fronted by Green Gartside, who is Brian Eno’s main competition for the title of the brainiest man in pop. Even when Mr. Gartside worked within the idiom of punk, he showed his incredible intellect. Moreover, their introductory discs showcased a nervous energy they replaced later on, though they didn’t sell out, they only became more unpredictable.
