It is bizarre to think about a kid’s birthday without a piñata because I am Mexican and I think most other kids in the area (Southern California) had them by osmosis too. I am aware it is possible to omit them , but it seems so natural to give children a stick and have them beat something with it to receive candy. Children crave violence.

He got to see her smile every day, saw that fond gleam in her own blue eyes every time he looked at her. Saw how alive and bright they became everytime she picked up an instrument, or reflected on the good times she had; both with and without him. No longer was the colour of her eyes dulled down by her silent disappointment in him everytime he did a line or picked up a syringe. They no longer looked void and soulless, just like they did everytime they’re parents spoke or put their hands on her. She was happy; John was happy.
