bless your sOULS so ok it all starts when emma gets a math scholarship (bc i have a headcanon that she's exceptional at math but the skill never really got noticed) for a college (probably a small liberal arts college) and enters as a sophomore after a falling out with her best friend, lily. her best friend that she had a thing with that never actually materialized so their falling out was reminiscent of a break-up. 

in this au she's also the foster daughter. look show, if you give me shitty retconned characters i'm going to use them in aus, especially if they involve giving emma swan faMILY AND FRIENDS. goddamnit show.

her roommate is lesbian!lacrosse player!mulan who introduces herself after removing her lacrosse mask and flipping her hair, ala canon. emma is like "whoa." we all agree with emma. then mulan introduces her to her best friends, biromantic asexual!aurora, gay!phillip (they dated for a while before he realized), and homoromantic bisexual trans girl!belle. belle has a twin sister who's cis and also bisexual, lacey. emma is still struggling with her sexuality but this awesome group of awesome queers is helping.

AND THEN THE CLUB FAIR HAPPENS and seated at the gay/straight alliance table is 1) biromantic bisexual non binary (goes by both she/hers and they/them) regina, who's hair is in one of those dorky dana scully ponytails and she has a lot of ear piercings and has a soft, soft smile between biting snark and emma is like. very. gay. all of a sudden. oh no. 2) "straight ally" mary margaret who keeps shouting things like YOU CAN JOIN IF YOU'RE STRAIGHT I'M STRAIGHT!! so regina makes her duty organizing email lists and handing out wristbands instead. she's also actually a biromantic heterosexual with a (really) bad crush on regina. everyone has a crush on regina.

AT THE FIRST MEETING: emma meets resident useless gray ace non lesbian, zelena, who wears a lot of plaid, doesn't really brush her hair, and mostly reads and annotates philosophy books for fun. she's regina's roommate, and is pretty much her actual cat. she hovers nearby regina in public but never really talks to her and is fiercely protective but in the growl and hiss from afar kind of way. emma also notices that regina is very physically affectionate with panromantic pansexual robin hood, who is not the robin hood of canon but rather thathobbgirl's robin hood, who is poly and biromantic bisexual and is played by laz alonso, and u should definitely ask her about him bc he's rad, and poly biromantic bisexual marian. she asks homoromantic bisexual ruby if she's dating one of them, and ruby's like "she used to date both! but now only robin and marian are dating." she also meets panromantic pansexual killian and biromantic bisexual david.

emma and regina eventually properly meet and become friends and emma realizes she's kind of fucked when regina ropes her into literally holding paint for her while regina paints leaves on the school musical's set of into the woods when she has an essay and a math test the next day. and when they make-out slightly covered in paint in the dressing room.
