In 1967, Muhammad Ali’s decision to refuse induction into the U.S. military initially troubled L. Douglas Wilder, a Richmond lawyer who had been awarded a Bronze Star for his heroism in Korea.
“It hit me right hard,” Wilder recalled Saturday morning, hours after Ali’s family announced the legendary boxing champion’s death at the age of 74.
“I said, ‘Wait a minute. What do you mean?’ ” Wilder recalled.
But Wilder said that, as he learned more about the causes and the human cost of the war in Vietnam, he came to believe that Ali was right.
“I said, ‘This guy was clairvoyant,’ ” Wilder recalled. “He was ahead of so many other people. He could talk the talk — and he damn sure walked the walk.”
