Exactly one month after he formally announced his campaign, former state Republican Party Chairman Doug Steinhardt — an enthusiastic supporter of President Donald Trump — abruptly dropped out of this year’s race for New Jersey governor on Monday night.
Steinhardt, a 52-year-old Warren County attorney, said in a statement he was exiting the battle for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, citing “unforeseen professional obligations.”
