from a young age florean had always loved two things above all else: history and sweets. all throughout his years at hogwarts it would be remiss to see the young man without his nose buried either in a book or an ice-cream cone, and it was quite often that he partook in both at the same time, careful not to let his treat drip onto the pages of his book lest he face the librarian’s wrath. his parents often joked that he must have bribed the sorting hat to ignore his talent for ancient artifacts and histories in order to have constant access to the kitchens, but anyone who knew florean well also knew that his values extended beyond the realm of wisdom and his steadfast nature of determination marked him as a true badger. it bothered him, sometimes, that his parents had such a vested and overbearing interest in his studies and future career, but having been raised on a steady and learned diet of deference, he took the electives they chose for him and did his best to excel in all areas possible. the first, biggest, and only issue between himself and his parents is to this day the reason cited for his parent’s current lack of presence in his life. it was during the winter break of his seventh year at hogwarts that his parents informed him of a generous job offer at a swiss magical research facility set to start the following autumn, as well as their acceptance of this offer on his behalf. they had rented him an apartment in the same city as the facility, booked a train ticket, and had already deposited a hefty sum of gold into a new vault set aside for him in order to get him settled in the new country. at the time, florean had been rendered speechless, and hadn’t been able to bite out a word other than a customary ‘thank you’. he certainly never said anything that would have hinted at what was to come: that, on the day of his hogwarts graduation, he would empty out his vault and purchase an empty property on diagon alley in order to open his very own ice-cream shoppe. knowing his parents would likely do all they could to reverse what was quite possibly his first independent move in his entire life, he solidified his choice by cutting off all ties with them. now, about ten years later, the shoppe is hitting its stride in success. however, though his ice-cream formula is unique and his flavor selection undoubtedly delicious, most of his income has been made under-the-table, through large tips given by patrons wishing to keep certain sections of the seating area 'pure and private', as well as a few bribes here and there from characters asking for information florean has likely overheard as the shoppe seems to be somewhat of a popular meeting destination for people of various creeds. while florean would love nothing more to have his livelihood supported by only that which he is passionate about, the glaring truth is that sometimes these under-the-table dealings are the only reason he's able to stay afloat.
