is Doukhobor a closed practice? I'm really interested in it and live in Canada (not BC) but I have no idea how I'd even get started practicing.

anyways, unfortunately it is a closed practice now (wasn't a few centuries ago), but tbh there's not that much that gets practised anymore apart from some services in Sask (in the original settlement area in Verigin, abt 9hr drive NW from Regina) and the Doukhobors in northern Georgia (the country), and surviving recipes and items. a lot of us don't even speak Russian, i think there are abt 200 ppl still alive who speak Doukhobor-Russian as their first language incl my Deda, and others like my mom who used to know it js from speaking to their relatives.

ofc you are SOOOO so welcome to participate in stuff :))))))))))))))) the "closed" part would be moreso actually calling and considering yourself Doukhobor bc there are some specific factors that formed who they became that isn't present in a lot of other groups. (personally i want to explore how the SoF went from pacifism + peaceful protest -> domestic terrorism + a cult; my Baba's entire family was part of this group and her brothers were some of the 200 children taken to the New Denver residential school, so there's also a personal component to that lol) they're also technically classified as an ethnoreligious group, however so is Judaism and you can convert to parts of that so this point is a little weaker considering they're (abrahamic religions) all lowkey the same thing. i will note that the way Doukhobors practice Christianity was referred to as being the closest version of Christianity as described in the Bible, so i think that's also something to consider.

im not sure how far into your Doukhobor research you've gotten, but i highly recommend the heritage site (here). it's run by this Doukhobor guy from Sask (i call him an anthropological historian but idk if he rly is) named John J Kalmakoff, mostly for Doukhobors doing family research but it is SUUUUPER informative if you're js wanting to learn :))))))))) im also so happy to send u info or talk abt Doukhobor stuff if you're comfy dming :)))) i hope i was able to help answer your question!!

edit several hours later: js remembered the bread salt and water thing and the cemeteries lol usually we have at least a pic of that in the house (ours is upstairs by mine and my sister's bedrooms for when we stay over), typically it's just used as a centrepiece but it can also be for special things (ex: birthday, wedding, etc). Doukhobors consider bread, salt, and water to be the elements of sustaining life. the cemetery thing is just that there are a Lot of Doukhobor-specific cemeteries all across the Kootenays in BC and in the surrounding areas of Verigin in Sask, and maaaaany many of them are family-specific or at least contain the kinship cluster. these 2 elements are also closed practice, esp the cemeteries (if you can find one you can absolutely go and visit, js don't like. get put to rest there lol). that is all :3

thinking abt the Verigin murder and how that's a "great Canadian mystery," yet if you read enough about it it is incredibly obvious what the answer is. so i was like hmm maybe it's the identity of the ppl on the train? maybe the motivation? or who organized it?

find of the fucking month jesus christ i found an old geocities page a few weeks ago with a HUGE genealogy tree (with sources) and i finally connected it to my family. and now i can add the entire thing to what ive mapped out because it is WAY more of my family than i realized.

i got very focused on trying to find how my deda and his sister are connected when i first found it and kept collecting information in the background to try to find the paper trail connecting his deda to him. i knew i was finding a few people i recognized from the tree but wasn't paying attention to the generational order. i have to go through sources from my POV, my mom's POV, and my deda's POV to how everyone is related and it is a lot to keep track of lol

anyways i remembered my deda telling me his dad left for some family back in Russia. and realized oh wait so maybe im having a lot of trouble finding it because it's probably not online or doesn't exist anymore. the only thing i have is a recording and im not even sure if im remembering it right. but if i am then i found the family back in Russia and their descendants :DD
