🇮🇩 Ernest Douwes Dekker — Sang Jembatan Dua Dunia
“The Indies are not just for the Dutch, but for everyone who feels they belong to it.”
🇬🇧 Ernest Douwes Dekker — The Bridge Between Two Worlds
Ernest François Eugène Douwes Dekker, later known as Danudirja Setiabudi, was born in Pasuruan in 1879.
He was one of Indonesia’s legendary “Tiga Serangkai” (Three Musketeers) — alongside Ki Hajar Dewantara and Dr. Tjipto Mangunkusumo — who founded the Indische Partij, the first political organization openly advocating Indonesian independence.
Born of Dutch–Javanese descent, Douwes Dekker faced racial discrimination that fueled his resolve to challenge colonialism. He believed that the Indies belonged to everyone who loved it, regardless of race or bloodline.
“The Indies are not just for the Dutch, but for everyone who feels they belong to it.”
He fought for education, equality, and national consciousness long before independence was even imagined.
Sukarno honored him with the name Danudirja Setiabudi, meaning “the great soul devoted to truth.”
His legacy lives on as a reminder of courage, unity, and critical thought — the foundation of a truly independent nation.
