Many years ago, Humans and Monsters shared the Surface...
It was an uneasy truce between these two nations, with minor conflicts breaking out along their borders constantly.
One day, the Crown Prince of the Monsters happened upon Human Royalty being assaulted by Monster bandits. He saved the Royal Party and was struck by how beautiful she was. They fell in love and visited each other often along the Border close to where they first met.
The Human princess was not careful enough, however, and she was followed by a young guard all the way to her love’s meeting place. The guard saw them embrace and, being ambitious, returned to the palace to tell his captain. The captain, also an ambitious human, reported the princess’ treason to the King.
Enraged that one of his daughters could fall in love with a Monster, he declared war on the Monsters and sent an army to bring his daughter home and turn the Monster who defiled her to Dust.
Their Crown Prince turned to Dust the day before his Coronation, the heartbroken Monster nation turned to the second Prince and his bride to lead them against the Humans. The War between the Monsters and Humans went on for decades before Humans were able to harness the power of their souls and drive the Monsters into Mt Ebott and seal them in forever.
As for the Human princess who dared love a Monster; she was exiled from her country when she was found to be pregnant. Her descendants gathered the scattered hybrids from both war torn nations and hid with them deep in the mountains around Mt Ebott. From there, they protect and monitor the Seal surrounding their Monster brethren.
