Long-billed Dowitchers and Stilt Sandpipers Limnodromus scolopaceus and Calidris himantopus
2/11/2024 Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, California
Most of the birds in this photo are (presumed long-billed) dowitchers, which have that white saddle patch on their back. Mixed in are some stilt sandpipers, which are slightly smaller than the dowitchers and have a mostly white tail with a dark terminal band and shorter bills.

"Although the two dowitcher species are strikingly similar in appearance, they tend to segregate by habitat. The Long-billed prefers fresh water at all seasons; it is a common migrant through much of North America (but scarce in the northeast)."
