Have you ever played any of the classic Tony Hawk games? See, to me that's the direction Sonic's level design should go in. Keep the speed based gameplay from Unleashed/Colors/Generations, but instead of a straight pathway there should be a open-ended stage with multiple objectives to complete, while the level design still provides plenty of pathways to allow one toe boost around n stuff.
Classic Tony Hawk games were always something I really wanted to get in to but I never ended up intersecting with any. I played a lot of the demos for Tony Hawk 1 and 2 on both the Playstation and Dreamcast, but never owned one.
My cousin ended up loaning me his copy of Tony Hawk’s Project 8 for the Xbox 360 (back when the only 360 game I owned was Sonic 06). I almost finished it, but there was an unmistakable feeling that at that point, Tony Hawk games had kind of jumped up their own butts.
It was clearly was not made with a person like me in mind. Everything about Project 8 assumed you’d already played all seven previous Tony Hawk games. Still, I struggled through it and got all the way to challenging Tony Hawk himself, where I eventually just gave up.
You’re right; Sonic games could learn a lot from Tony Hawk. Personally, I like the concept that chaining trick combos together in Tony Hawk makes you get more air on half pipes and go faster in general. I was actually going to write about how if there was a linear level that played like that it would be pretty cool, but I guess Tony Hawk 1 has the Downhill Jam events, doesn’t it?
Of course, Tony Hawk fans will also tell you that the Downhill Jam events are the most annoying ones in the game, if my cursory glance at Youtube means anything. But I think the concept does have some merit.
I should really play the Downhill Jam game on the Wii.
