What Does the Future Hold for WithMe, Nevada's Most Well-Funded Startup?
Serendipity, Fiction, and a Home Away
Serendipity, Fiction, and a Home Away
A friend in publishing told me that every book finds its audience. If so, the journey taken by Laura McBride‘s We Are All Called To Rise to me is worthy of sharing. It has been a full summer of work. In need of a vacation, Las Vegas emerged as a surprising choice. It is not expensive to fly there and lodgings are affordable. So despite the 100+ heat, we set off to the Nevada desert in August. It…

The Downtown Project is the topic of the Freakonomics podcast.
The Zappos CEO is spending $350 million to build a startup paradise in downtown Las Vegas. It hasn't been all unicorns and butterflies
This is the most recent best summary of what's going on downtown.
Downtown Project (DTP): Please come downtown!
Citizens: There's nowhere to park.
DTP tears down a building and paves the land .... and fences it off
DTP: Please come downtown!
Citizens: Where's the parking? Why can't we park in that place you paved?
DTP builds a marketplace downtown, hires advertising firm to design massive signs and banners to put up telling people about the marketplace. Hires security officers to keep non-employees out.
DTP: Come to our marketplace!! It's pretty!
Citizens: Still nowhere to park and my friends who went were told they weren't allowed in the building.
DTP sticks trailers on the paved, fenced-in land and fills one with books and calls it an education center.
DTP: Please visit our education center!!
Citizens: Parking? Unlocked doors on the "library"? PARKING? Anything at it other than a locked library and empty trailers?
DTP starts to run out of money and fires employees.
DTP: Please come, why is no one coming to downtown?
Citizens: Do you not understand the concept of cars and needing to put them somewhere when we go places? Because you sure as hell don't understand the concept of public transportation, which became obvious when you got rid of a bunch of that.
DTP: But, we have bars! And bars! And a pizza place, which is in a bar! And all these fun spaces!
Citizens: And nowhere to park, and no public transportation to downtown, and no ability to actually USE those "fun spaces" because you've locked us out.
DTP throws a giant party, employees only.
DTP: We're so awesome.
Citizens: Yeah, we're going to be over here, spending our money in places we can get to.
DTP: Why does no one like us? Hello? Where did everybody go? Hello? We're starting to run out of money! Please give us money. Anyone?
