I honestly think Fringe introduced the Observers with the idea that they would figure them out later and when later came they realized that they hadn't done that yet.
Because the Observer storyline makes no sense. They exist in all parts of time and yet still need Spanish Flu vaccinations but not current ones? They want to document Walternate making the cure for Peter's illness but "mess up" so it is missed whereas if they hadn't wanted to document that "important moment" it would have resulted in Walternate saving Peter and Walter not crossing and yet they are mad after the damage of the crossing starts to heal because of the bridge and Peter returns. They don't like Earth 2014 yet choose it not a time after that is closer to their preferences? They get mad when their own are killed in the near future but causing the death of one of them in 2012 was enough to make the person he died for worth saving? Their "set course/proper course" leaves their greatest threats alive just to take them out a few years later? And invading the time period of said greatest threats WON'T change the timeline that leads to their creation? Really? Enslaving your predecessors will make them want to make you? You sure about that?
Honestly it feels like they realized they were running out of possible seasons and were scrambling for a plot for the Observers because the fans would mutiny if answers were never given and someone watched the Goo-Backs episode of South Park and they figured that was as good a plot as any.
But all the contradictions of the Observers that late season 4 and season 5 created that make no sense aside I don't think the writing team realized what they ended up actually saying with the Observers.
The Observers are supposedly emotionless. And yet we constantly see them express annoyance, arrogance, anger, and irritation. They invade and what do they do? Grab women and indulge in food and drink and shooting things. They put themselves in charge but mainly use their positions to punish the natives who are left still managing all the day to days of staying alive. No cultural addition, no work, no sharing of tech, no new foods or anything else. All they do is take whatever they want, install puppet leaders to handle actual administration, and torture anyone who looks at them funny.
So of course it makes sense that every single Observer is a white man.
