Kino International does an excellent job with the release of 1915 Silent Classic
Kino International has a history of rare and intriguing film release on DVD and video, and A Fool There Was is an intelligent film. The film was based on a game that was based on the Rudyard Kipling poem called The Vampire, that Mr. Kipling, in turn based on a famous painting. The film tells of a woman and licentious connivingly known as the evil vampire, portrayed by Theda Bara to dramatic effect. The publicity led to the release of the film including the items to be as much the opposite Bara spelling of 'Arab', and Theda as an anagram of 'death' of the word. In reality, 'Bara' is derived from a household name, and 'Theda' is a shortened form of his real name Goodman 'Theodosia'. Bara publicity photos showed disturbing and outrageous poses with a human skeleton (based on the painting that inspired Kipling). These disturbing images and lived up to the final result of the film. Bara is known as the vampire character, though his ways are not evil supernatural. Seduce important and successful men, strips them of all dignity, and eventually destroys them. At the beginning of the film, an argument with his former lover has a character makes the poor 'fool' to shoot himself. (The 'vampire', says right before the suicide, "Kiss me, my fool!") Suicide has no ill effect on the vampire ', it causes quite a laugh. John Schuyler (played by Edward Jose) soon becomes his next victim. Shuyler Bara seduces a boat trip to Italy. Schuyler improper conduct after he loses his important position of the government and separates with his wife and son. During this time entirely under the control of the vampire, he's a broken man and shameful that spends his time drinking and competing for attention Bara. When returned to the U.S., his wife tries to reconcile, but is hampered by the chemistry between Vampire. The Theda Bara, Edward Jose is palpable and engaging. Jose does a great job they have her character fall off in pieces throughout the film. To Bara part, she is every bit as sensual and dangerous. This film has coined 'vamp' the term still applied to women attracitive and destructive. Coffin became a major sex symbol after the publication of A Fool There Was, and is now remembered in the annals of international cinema history.Kino the package of A Fool There Was DVD includes an excerpt from the original game, skeleton Theda Bara publicity photos The Rudyard Kipling's original poem, and a brief history of film. The restored print is very nice to look at for his age. Fans of silent films are not to miss this fascinating film history with its intriguing story, superb acting and fantastic costumes. Unfortunately, few films of Theda Bara is known to exist today. Yet, if a film is worth Theda survived the ravages of time, A Fool There Was is likely that the film very much.
