DQM2 - The End...

Well, that was a bit anticlimactic. The main story felt a lot shorter than the first game. Yep, I had about 60 hours on the first game, and only 30 on this one! I just realized I didn't see a single mimic! I don't think I maxed out a single monster (except the first gen ones in the farm). The final boss, the monster king Darck, gave me a bit of trouble, but I just grinded for a bit. My final team was damselfly (fairy drak +10), mummy +7, and rampage (goategon +6). During the climax of the story, I couldn't even access the arena, so I couldn't unlock new worlds to train in. I don't think I'll do the postgame, but I did go back and beat the normal S rank at the tournament. I also went back and fought that king squid from the pirate world, with some difficulty.

I almost missed it, but during the credits sequence where you can see Terry facing Prince Kameha in the arena! Terry easily beats him, as did I.

Anyway, I kind of want to play Caravan Heart next while I'm on a monsters kick. And I can put off DQVII until after that! But I really should play DQIII before the next remasters come out...

DQM2 - Sky World

Finished the sky world without any difficulty, at least when it came to battling. The puzzles in the dungeons were a different story.

I was able to brute force the coffins closed by walking around randomly. The one where you control the ghost was actually pretty fun. But the skeleton graveyard had me STUMPED. I was trying to follow the line of sight of each skeleton all the way around the room, but it didn't work! Finally I had to look up a walkthrough. Ugh. Still not as bad as the one where you have to find the minotaur or something in DQM1.

When I returned home with the prince, GreatLog was mostly underwater. No time for that, let's swing by the arena with my overpowered team! They closed it for plot reasons......

So I started breeding the next generation instead. Now I have drygon +8, dark crab +5, and rampage (goategon +6). I bred my cobra king with a merman, so now drygon finally knows zing (vivify)!

DQM2 - Danger

Yesterday when I took out my microSD card to back up my DQM2 save, it fell into a glass of water that I had on my desk!! After retrieving it immediately and letting it dry out for over 12 hours, everything seems fine. I'm glad I do the backups because I only would have lost 3 or 4 hours. But still!

I'm about 20 hours into the game now, and I've been making progress. I beat the B Rank tournament with a strong team of bubble slime (babble +2), pyro, and beavern. Now I'm raising the next generation, but it still feels like they learn their parents' skills annoyingly slowly. Also, I feel like I've been scouting and hatching a disproportionate number of female monsters. I've had to start using the egg evaluator, which I don't think I ever did in the first game!

I am getting stronger though. I can clear those randomly generated worlds now. Current lineup is cobra king (king cobra), dark crab, and beavern +4.

This game has a lot of brand new monsters that don't seem to be in any other DQ games, like pyuro and the dark crab. Look how great they are! I wonder where these illustrations come from. A guide book?

Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 - Tara's Adventure

Time for a new yet familiar adventure! Right away, I noticed improvements to the graphics and audio, despite being on the same system. There's a lot more color in the overworld and monster sprites. I usually play with the sound off since I fast forward, but I did catch some interesting sound effects. For example, when Tara is performing with a circus for the king of the Oasis world, you can hear the audience clapping and whistling!

There's a pretty nice aerial shot of GreatLog when you first arrive. Also, I'm glad I picked Tara, because Cobi's hat looks like a funny cowboy hat in sprite form. Cobi stays at the family farm to tend to my monsters, but I wouldn't be surprised if we have to battle each other later on as a parallel to the first game.

After the Oasis world, I visited the arena and easily beat the kids tournament. One of the spectators mentioned Mireille, which awed me. Also, you can enjoy a chat with your monster team just like in the first game.

The game makes you clear the first two worlds (Oasis world and Pirate world) in order to unlock monster breeding. The Oasis world and the kids tournament were easy, but by the end of the Pirate world, I was definitely feeling the strain of how slowly my monsters were growing. But now that we can breed monsters, it's all smooth sailing from here, right? I will say, the detailed mini-worlds aren't my favorite. They have towns with inns, priests, and shops, just like a mainline Dragon Quest game. In addition, the ability to walk back to the door and use the GreatLog key any time makes healing and hoarding items trivially easy. In the first game, I rarely used a chimaera wing to exit early, since the dungeons all had fewer than 30 floors. Because I liked the randomized dungeons from the first Dragon Warrior Monsters! Just like Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon! Luckily, someone on mastodon informed me that these are just the worlds for the main story, and you can also obtain keys that unlock random dungeons along the way.

I neglected to use the library to look at my Monsterpedia in the first game, and it is pretty neat. I took screenshots of a couple entries, but only a few turned out well.

After a bit of monster synthesis, it's time for the Ice world! My current team has Sevin the wingslime +1, Squiz the hoodsquid, and Muey the goodybag (jewelbag). In this game, you can get a random nickname for your monster if you leave it blank! However, it's kind of hard to remember who's who, so I might go back to the first game's style of naming (abbreviation for monster species).
