醜悪 "shuuaku" name explained

the first of a series of upcoming cyberia vignettes called ↑ D1@L-UP: // D3NPA! ☆

the original title of the vignette was called "ugliness" but was changed to capture the nuances of the content.

醜悪 (しゅうあく, shuuaku) is made of:

醜 (しゅう, shuu) = ugly, unsightly, shameful

悪 (あく, aku) = evil, bad, wicked

shuuaku is already a stronger word than "ugliness" also carrying shades of the following...

grotesque

vile

sordid

disgusting

reprehensible

the word "shuuaku" can be used to describe something visually repellant and morally corrupt behavior.

the word "shuuaku" was purposefully chosen to capture that dr. blaster is "ugly" in both body and soul.

i can't wait to explore the differences between the blaster brothers (by the way, tanpopo and zetsubou/dr. blaster are brothers!) both of them are academics and i think it would be interesting to explore what drives them both and what sets them apart.

i really want to write a scene like this between kyuten and dr. blaster

the vice and vial alliance rename explained

before settling on “vice & vial” for their luminara name, i considered “sinthesis” as a play on words of “sin” and “synthesis.” however this broke the established naming convention more than what i ended up going with. i was going to call them “the sinthesis twins” as a cute reference to their names sounding similar (zetsubou & yokubou) but i didn’t want to confuse the audience by insinuating they were related. even now, i’m still pretty proud of that pun XD

it’s also worth noting that the “vial” in their luminara name also has a double meaning, being both “vial” to reference zetsubou’s background as a mad scientist and “vile” to reference his nasty personality. read that way, “vice & vile” sound more synonymous which i thought played into the similarities between their names. this was eventually changed to “the despair desire alliance” to fit the established naming convention.
