the view in between - harry goodsir x gn!reader — using this list with the prompt, "It cannot get any worse." word count: 1.5k words a/n: harry and his optimism is something i wished i had (maybe—maybe not. gotta keep that pessimistic streak going, ig)

"It cannot get any worse."

The words he spoke just days before did little to quench your need for anything remotely hopeful. And of course, it wasn't truly anything that Mr. Goodsir did. For every bad thing that happened, Mr. Goodsir existed—he did as he could, adequately meeting requirements that made a good and dutiful surgeon. But everyone had their flaws. Perhaps his was being unable to make your worries lessen, if he had any to begin with. 

You found your way into the sickbay, quietly waiting until Mr. Goodsir dismissed his current patient, one of the able seaman you had helped only a few hours prior. You did not hear what the good doctor said, but you did not do much to listen in on the conversation. You had your own to worry about—another thing, like the health of your fellow sailor, was not something you were entirely impartial to. 

With a quick farewell and a nod to you, the sailor left the room. Only you and Goodsir remained.

The man cleaned up what he had used moments prior, though from what you could tell, it seemed as if the sailor had interrupted him (it wasn't anything that he had used on the man himself). He looked up at you, a soft smile evident on his face. 

"Good evening," he said, your name joining soon thereafter. "Are you well?"

"Yes," you immediately said. "Yes, I am... physically, I am well."

"Nothing ails you, then?" Goodsir asked, rebounding his leather journal and tucking it away in his pocket so as not to let just anyone come upon the contents of his studies and innermost thoughts and feelings. 

"Nothing physical."

The answer seems so minute in the grand scheme of things. Out here, ice-locked in the pack. You wish it was something physical, because if it was, you would have no issue in coming to Goodsir like any of the others. But this one, much like the few days before when you first spoke to Goodsir, it seemed to have settled deep within your belly, ice cold instead of a general warmth. If it was something physical, you would not feel this way—you would not feel as if all if lost. As if there was no point in continuing on the way in which you had.

Not all was lost, of course. You may be ice-locked, but only a winter or two and then you would be returning to England. Surely you could hold on until then. But this feeling—this... sorrow. It was all too real. It was all too much.

Goodsir eyed you warily before he motioned for you to take a seat. 

"No, I—"

"—sit," he softly ordered, sitting at the table himself. You hesitantly took the one across from him, frowning all the while. 

His eyes met yours once you had settled down. Not a word was said—only a look of disheartened confusion on your end and one of utter vexation on his. He knew just enough to know that this was not healthy. It was not right for you to feel such a way. 

And yet, he understood.

He knew why you felt such a way. If he were honest, he felt it, too. The way doubt trickled in, branching off from each new worry that linked together, continuing to trickle down to his fingers, to his toes. The very cells in which made him would surely feel it, too. It was as if the rot had settled in, spreading from mind to mind, cell to cell. 

It would not last forever.

Neither would the silence.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Goodsir, I don't know why I came," you said, going to stand with a frown. The silence was too much, too loud. It did little to quiet your mind.

"Stay," he quickly said, though it was not an order. It came after he had stood to stop you, hand raised and nearly touching your arm. Your eyes flickered quickly to his hand before you sat down, doing as he wanted. 

Silence had no time to settle in this time.

"I know what I said to you seemed rather... unfulfilling," he said, frowning softly as he looked at you. "It was not my intention, though. I... did mean it in a positive manner, you see? Ah... It cannot get any worse," he continued on, though it was enough to catch your attention. That soft pause, the hitch in his throat. 

He knew it to be as it was—not true, not even remotely true. Saying it aloud did little to stop your mind from taking the pitch and running with it.

"You and I both know that's not true," you said, lip catching between your teeth as you watch him. "I do not think you are as oblivious as what your statement makes you out to be."

"Oblivious?"

"I... I know you understand why I came to you," you said, looking away from him. "It is not like Doctor Stanley would take too kindly for troubles of the mind. But truly, Mr. Goodsir, I... you cannot expect me to believe that."

He cleared his throat and leaned forward on his seat, catching your eye once more. "There is such wonder here," he said, eyes searching yours—perhaps for something more than what you were offering him. "It is beautiful in the same way that it is terrifying. Breathtaking as it is spellbinding." Goodsir's fingers clenched around the end of the sweater he wore. "Our minds can play cruel tricks on us, especially if we lock it up, deep inside. I..." Goodsir paused, looking up at you. "Would you be willing to try something?"

The slight quirk in your eyebrow was enough to make him stand. He began to speak as he walked over to a chest in the corner by where Stanley typically sat if he were in.

"I do not know why I did not think of this sooner," Goodsir said, hoping to explain his thought process. 

"What would you have me do?" you asked, peering over in his direction from where you sat. 

"Write." His answer was so simple. He pulled out a small bound journal, one that could fit easily in your coat pocket if you needed it to. With that, he grabbed a pencil from one of the many shelves lining the room and came back to you, sitting in front of you. You eyed it warily, slowly pulling your eyes up to his. 

"Write?"

"Yes," he said, smiling proudly at the concept. "Write."

"What would that do?" you asked, fingers pulling at a stray thread on your clothing. "If I cannot verbally express how I... what I am thinking to even you, how would I write it?"

"You are the only one who will read this," he said, pushing it in your direction. "I will not read it unless you wish for me to. As long as you keep it somewhere safe and hidden, it will only ever meet with your eyes."

Were you truly to be helped by the simple task of writing out your thoughts? 

No. Perhaps not. But it was a start. 

"Until I am able to convince you otherwise, your prescription is to write."

You stared at the journal for a moment too long. "What happened to coca-wine?" 

"Off limits unless you prove you truly need it."

"And if I said I did?"

"I think if you truly did believe then you would not be sitting here in front of me, wanting me to tell you the same thing over and over. You are smarter than you give yourself credit for, and I do wish there were things I could do rather than—"

"—you do plenty," you quickly said, not wanting him to think his efforts were in vain. "I... yes, it has not made me very hopeful, but as long as one of us remains so, then it cannot all be for naught, hm?"

Goodsir's smile, weak as it may be, was enough to settle your current anxious thoughts. Your fingers relaxed and you grabbed the journal and pencil from the table, stowing them away in your pockets.

"You are not your thoughts," he then said, standing up as he spoke. "They may exist alongside of you, but they do not define you. Hope comes from the smallest of places. Even a sapling of hope will one day grow into something more."

"You think I have hope?"

"I know you have hope," Goodsir said, words mulling about in your mind. "If you hadn't, you would stay far away from surgeons and doctors alike."

With a nod toward the door, it became obvious that Goodsir wished to take a stroll about the ship. 

"Come to the top with me," he said. "Let me tell you what I see, and then maybe you can tell me if I am foolish to believe things can only get better."

A soft huff of laughter came from you. "I do not know if that is wise, Doctor."

"Mister," he corrected, "and how many times must I tell you? I do believe we know each other well enough to be friends by now. Call me Harry."
