TENDERNESS

Xiaolin OC Awareness Week

Day Five: It’s like Looking into a Mirror

Writers: have your OC describe how they think they come across to the world.  Their perception is not always reliable, and these inconsistencies should reveal the character’s true nature.  Alternately write a scene or scenario where your OC’s perception of the world is wrong and lands them in trouble.

  The question throws her. How she seems to others isn’t something she thinks about often. Well there are certain ways Mia wishes people wouldn’t see her but it’s not like she can do a lot about that. Sometimes those feelings are justified.

 “Well, I try to keep a strong front. Try to hide a lot of what goes on beneath. I don’t want to seem needy or weak or like I just want attention. Though I am concerned that this makes me seem uncaring or emotionless. Which is not the case at all. I care too much. Apparently that’s a problem.

  As for emotionless, maybe it’s true. I feel but maybe not as strongly as others. It’s kinda muted or forced that way. I don’t know. It doesn’t really matter. Yes, I would prefer that people wouldn’t look at me and see how weak, how insignificant or empty I feel. Or look at me and decide I was someone they can manipulate and control. I wish that those who learn what I contain wouldn’t fear me, not that they shouldn’t. But …

  I can’t change that. I can’t change how strangers see me unless I make them not strangers. All I can do is keep up the image I would like to portray. All I can do is be kind and do what I believe is right. How the world sees that in that moment or in the far flung future is of no consequence. The songs and the fame holds no meaning for me. Only the people I can help along the way are what matter. If no one remembers me long after I am gone, then so be it. I did what I could and I will be proud of that.”

  A pause and she goes over her words. Mouthing the question once more. Frowning she continues. “Does that answer the question? I feel like I didn’t really answer it. Just threw it away. I’m sorry, I’ll try again. How the world perceives me? Hmm … I would hope I’m seen as kind, thoughtful, controlled and not falling apart, intelligent maybe. I don’t know. Still of the opinion that it doesn’t really matter.”
