Hatching a DRAGON was something few people got to do, even within his own family. They were always born in multiples, so it was more often the dragon who was left waiting for their rider to be born, rather than the other way around.
Cassius wasn’t like that. He was different. His sister had bonded with the last hatchling and more had yet to be birthed. So while his big sister had been greeted at birth by an enthusiastic baby dragon, Cassius was the one doing the greeting.
Eagerness had settled into the big heart of a little boy when he had finally been given an egg, when he could finally wrap his small frame around it in an effort to keep it warm. And of course, when it hatches, that excitement hit its peak. Here was the dragon he would form a lifelong partnership with.
The dragon was christened LEONIDAS. A name that he had been chided for. A lion, after all, isn’t as strong as a dragon. How could it be? But rather then physical strength, Cassius is hoping for strength of HEART—something he seems to sorely lack.
Quickly the little dragon grows, from a small hatchling that Cassius can just barely cradle in his arms to one that’s clinging to his hair, riding atop his head with his hind legs positioned on his shoulders. Leonidas’s tail is in constant motion behind them, like an excited dog who’s master has just returned from a long trip.
“Leo,” Cassius addresses the dragon softly, reaching up to hold his front claws. The dragon leans forward, long neck allowing them to see eye to eye despite the positions their in. “Are you warm enough?”
The wind was light and the dragon’s position kept him warm, but baby dragons were known for having low body temperatures until they were mature enough to harness their fire into breath and the first sign of a NEGLECTFUL rider was failing to monitor whether or not their partner was keeping warm...
