“This will be your home, for now.”
The words would have felt insincere coming out of anyone else. Far too many times she had been promised the simple notion of being able to stay, only to either have it revoked once they realized what she was, or for disaster to inevitably follow in her wake. (Some evils couldn’t be outrun forever, as much as she sometimes tried.) Out of anyone else, she would have just expected to have to pick up and leave to wander again...
But. This was Laurel, and every title and act of history that came with that name. It was difficult to be swayed back into her usual response of it’s fine and to slip out in the night like the shadow that she was. No one typically wanted a shade-touched around for long.
But...surely with who Laurel was, and what, she already knew about what she was. So the response was mildly confusing, to say the least, even as she believed in the sincerity of it.
“You don’t have to...” But she trailed off rather awkwardly, and now she wasn’t really looking the other woman in the eyes. She even looked like nothing compared to her--all well-worn traveling-cloak and fur-lined leathers over a toughly-muscled frame, with a particularly brutal-looking greatsword strapped to her back. “I’m of little consequence.” What interest would a ruling dragon-slayer have in a wanderer with a dark magic problem? Just because she had been muttering to herself about finding a place to stay...
