The eco fash and eugenicist leftists (yes, whether you admit it or not, you exist) aren't going to like this but I rank the invention of plastic as one of the top 5 best inventions to ever happen to medicine, along with soap, insulin, vaccines, and rehydration salt fluids
Absolutely! People who want to eliminate plastic production in its entirety ignore how it is used in *countless* ways medically. You know how surgical instruments stay sterile? Plastic packaging to keep them that way. How subdermal implants can be lightweight and comfortable as the body moves (to the point of being unnoticeable) and still disperse the medication for even years before needing to be changed out? Plastic bodies! Do you know what many modern stitches are? Plastic! Bc it has the ability to be fully sterilized and stretchable enough to move without snapping or tearing the skin while keeping the wound closed and in a position to heal.
If you wanna go after plastic: go after the consumer culture that puts ridiculous amounts of kids toys in dumps and clothes made by fast fashion. But this is a strong case of the ironic "all generalizations are bad" truism. I am all for reducing plastic waste and it's damage on the environment, but don't even *look* at the medical industry, let alone blame it until youve "solved" about ten other industries, cos this one improves and saves lives.
I'm on record as a plastic-hater but ALWAYS with the caveat that it's important for medicine
really I think it's gone way too far in all other areas like clothing, but obviously medicine is a whole other ballpark (hell, even in my own life- I wear contact lenses, which were theorized before the invention of plastics but never practical, and my glasses would have broken so many times over the years if the lenses were still actual glass)
someday hopefully medical plastic will be made from not-oil, but please understand that my criticism of plastic NEVER includes the medical field
Plastic is a wonderful, life-saving family of materials with unique properties that allow them to do things that no other known materials can, that unfortunately just happens to be dangerously overused right now for the sake of being cheap.

To not be the #TooWoke guy but it's kinda crazy how nobody talks about Deanreldy taking advantage of the fact Beldaruit is disabled, especially with the kneeling bit when Beldaruit is being carried, and then abusing his power over him as an able-bodied individual while Beldaruit was in a place with no magic and nobody there to help him because Deanreldy locked him up with the pretext of it being medical treatment, he takes away what little agency Beldaruit has in the situation.
This page specifically makes us incredibly unnerved because the framing of Beldaruit's hands and Deanreldy's arm in the panels. signifying how much of a physical difference both of them have then the middle art of Deanreldy literally being above Beldaruit while he merely lays there with a somber look on his face.
Some normal art cus I'm decent now (nop)

Olruggio with the kids he didn't want
Something about how qifrey's moral greyness is a comfort to coco. Something about how she feels she can trust him because his values aren't always what's considered 'right'. Something about how she knows he might understand the things you do when ur trapped in a corner and the guilt you feel after it. He sees it as such an evil thing but his kids see it as confirmation that he is a person and has the capacity to see them as people and will be on their side no matter what they tell him

Sound on
It looks like it can't get any better, but I am begging you, turn the sound on
I don't know this sport.
(wha spoilers) but it is genuinely astounding to me just how often qifreys disability is overwritten or just flat out ignored in fanwork or discussion of the story. i understand that his disability is a spoiler (for the most part) but it is more than a little ridiculous when i see countless posts about the silverwood or memory erasure and next to nothing about the fact that he is actively going blind. i can understand on posts staying spoiler-free and wanting to talk about the disability in wha, but to see so little acknowledgement of such a major part of the story is baffling.
from the first acknowledgement of qifreys stolen eye, we are told that his decision to accept his disability wasnt made because he personally felt no drive to seek aid, but because the kind of aid he needed would require him to leave witch society permanently. his memory would be wiped (again) and he would even forget the reason for his missing eye in the first place. the first introduction of his disability serves to teach us about his intentions with coco and the attitude he has dealt with since he was first found. its essential character motivation and world-building. and its given to us by his disabled mentor (arguably adoptive father) who is one of the most-honored witches alive.
despite being raised by a man with a visible disability who needs mobility aids, qifrey has felt the need to keep his worsening disability a secret from everyone in his life. and its explicitly because of the nature of his disability, not just the existence of the silverwood. witch society doesnt accommodate for blindness because it cannot fathom a blind witch to begin with. and if qifreys blindness were to be made public knowledge, he most likely assumes hed be under threat of another memory wipe.
the silverwood is a persistent danger to qifrey, but his oncoming blindness is the clock on his goals. qifrey was likely blind from birth, with the silverwood gifting him vision for the first time (thus his blindness is essential to understanding how the silverwood functions and what likely happened to him as a child)
qifrey refers to his eyes in plural here, meaning he either theorizes or knows that he was blind at birth and the silverwood returning his vision is why the brimhats took his eye to begin with. the silverwood isnt a fantasy angst that allows you to write around the deuteragonist of this story going blind, its a function of how his disability works in this fantasy world and what this characters experience of disability is like.
tl;dr - qifrey is disabled. and its through his disability that we come to understand his experience and how he views himself (changing cocos language of "who are you" to "what i am"). and how the world around him views his disability (note: this olruggio scene happens while he is aware of qifreys oncoming blindness.)
