Up in the air

Up in the air is a dramedy starring George Clooney, (one of my favorites) Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga. It was directed by Jason Reitman and was released in 2009.

Up in the air tells the story of Ryan, an isolated man whose job is to fire people from different companies when their bosses don't have the guts to do it themselves. He spends his entire life on planes and sleeping in hotel rooms because of his demanding travel schedule.  When a young Cornell graduate, Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) wants to start doing the "terminations" over video chat, making travel not part of the job, Ryan takes her on the road to show her the importance of the face to face interaction. When Ryan meets Alex, (Vera Farmiga) another avid traveler and busy worker, he starts to question his choices in life.

I really, really liked this film. I loved that it didn't follow the path you expected it to. The ending was great, and realistic, too. Obviously, I can't talk about what happens but although it is kind of dark it was a great choice.

Farmiga and Clooney were both excellent in this. Farmiga was playing the sexy but distant woman and Clooney playing a man who is no longer part of his family and only cares about work, or at least deludes himself into thinking that's what he cares about. Anna Kendrick was pretty good, too, but nothing to write home about.

Overall, a must see. It's both saddening and comical and a perfect fit for fans of realist dramas.
