I believe it was Kermit (the Frog) who said, "Life's like a movie, write your own ending, keep believing, keep pretending..." and I've got to agree.

I've seen my life lived out a thousand different ways already, and I'm not even half done.

To the guys and girls of L2, Buxton

An open letter to all the individuals who want to know what the deal is with that guy who dances in the corner of the club going CRAZY to big tunes with hair damp from sweat and a look of half-concentration and half-ecstasy happiness on his face.

That person is me.

And, yes, you have a right to ask. I’m not going to tell you “none of your dance business”, because I bring myself into a public arena, a public area, and deserve to be judged as a public figure by virtue of being there (in the same way that a person who dresses outrageously can’t be surprised when they get comment).

A couple of things:

 I love the music, the atmosphere, the independence, the optimism of people crowded into a small space and the way that people on a night out get to release a part of themselves they don’t usually show in public. (My Spanish friend, Ema, expressed it well at lunch recently when she said, “British people are so polite in the day time in the office, that’s why they go overboard at night.”)

The reason I go out dancing is because of the reasons above. I love it. I’m not looking for love. I’d be happy to make new friends (and I LOVE meeting everyone out that I already know) but making an impression is not my main ambition, having fun is.

So, I don’t particularly care what I look like. I’m focused on dancing, using a lot of energy, and moving as fast as the beat of the song (which is fast in 2013 with the advance of dupstep), so if I start sweating while I’m going crazy, that’s just a by-product of the action and I’m sorry if that offends you.

 Also, it is really, very, ridiculously HOT in that place. Not only because of having too many people crushed into one place, but also because the bar want to sell more drinks and if you’re hot, you’re thirsty.

 I don’t work out or go to the gym. Dancing is my main physical activity of the week (if you don’t count a wedding shift at work where I run faster than the Road Runner, or all the miles of walking/running I do between coffee shops on a weekday). Not going to the gym is my own choice – I don’t feel unfit, I don’t want to change the shape of my body at all and I’m not feeling unhealthy. But as a result, I guess I am gunna be more tired on a night out than people who are fitter. Just the way it is.

I’m not on drugs (and actually never even drink on a night out) so everything I do is just me being me (being the me that is me in a night club, but still me).

If you touch me, ruffle my hair, or hug me while I’m dancing, don’t be super surprised that I’m hot and damp. Look at me! You chose to touch me, I didn’t touch you. Why are you shocked and judgey?

I have no intention of changing the way that I behave on a night out, because I enjoy being Drappa. So please, get used to it.

If there’s music, I’m dancing and if I’m dancing, I’m hot (even in a place as cold as Buxton!)

So next time you see me on a night out – if you want a chat, we should meet outside where I can cool off. Or bring me a glass of water, I won’t say no to that. Don’t hug me, touch my hair or punch my shoulder – or at least if you do, don’t be surprised.
