// Koala // . Recent bushfire in Australia threatened koalas with extinction. Hundreds and probably up to a thousand Koala have died in the bushfire. It must have hurt so much to be burned alive 😢 I hope it’ll be over for them soon . Koalas are considered vulnerable to extinction but not yet functionally extinct. I didn’t know what’s functionally extinct so I looked it up and apparently it refers to when a species no longer has enough individual members to produce future generations or play a role in the ecosystem. So Koalas are NOT functionally extinct but vulnerable to extinction. . Some facts about Koalas - They are not bears - They have 6 opposable “thumbs” - They have downward facing pouches - They tend to sleep nearly all day in tree branches - Their average lifespan in the wild is about 20 years - They do not drink much water as they get their moisture from the Eucalyptus leaves. .
