Michael Wolf

German photographer Michael Wolf lives in Hong Kong and bases most of his work around major cities. I love every piece of work he does, which isn't very common. I was particularly drawn to his 'Tokyo Compression' photos as they are similar to the photos I took using glass.

These photos are taken of people travelling in Tokyo, the public transport gets really busy. You can see how the people put up with it just because it's the only way they can get anywhere, yet you can feel how much they dislike it and how trapped they feel.

These people live in what I assume is sheltered housing for older people. They all have the same size room and have been photographed in the same position. These photos really give an insight into the people's lives - they have each done something completely different with the space they are given. I find it interesting seeing how they live in such a confined space.

AUTOMATIC DRAWING- ANDRE MASSON

Andre Masson- A surrealist artist that is among one of the first to attempt automatic drawing. He created his images by letting his hand move freely across paper whilst in a 'semi-trance' state. This hypnosis-like trance was believed to be a direct connection with the realm of dreams, a place described by the automatic writer Andre Breton as "dictated by thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic of moral concern" 

The drawings themselves seem to have a dream-like quality as the lines flow fluidly from one object to the next, representing the inner thoughts of Masson. Gertrude Stein quoted Masson saying "what Stein called 'the wander line' is probably a key characteristic of my work. But it wasn't the line that was wandering, it was me". Even though some shapes aren't distinctive, others can be recognized as body parts (hands) or animals (birds).

fashion and poverty

for my next mini project i want to explore the link between fashion and poverty. i was inspired top do this over a discussion with other students and tutors about an article that was shared on the guardian website; http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/feb/17/fashion-most-hypercapitalist-businesses
