Starting my art residency with DRAWinternational
It’s been almost two weeks already. Two weeks of stepping into this “dream”. I’d committed to a summer season of bicycle tour guiding in 2016 with the idea that I might explore a bit of France, save up some Euros and free up some winter time for quiet space dedicated to exploring the creativity I hadn’t made time for in the past. Art / drawing / painting... anything really that emerged from that flow of energy that streams beyond commercial quirky quotes and rabbits on greeting cards.
The guiding season and its inter-human dynamics had sucked a fair serving of juice out of my happiness and my need for a reflective, tranquil space of recovery became increasingly important. I’d decided that winter was what I needed. A space where my body could hibernate. Where my mind could rest. A place where the outdoor wonderland of cycling, hiking and swimming wasn’t going to challenge my desire for introspection, meditation and nurturing. I searched for art residencies in the south of France (because I’m a sucker for cheese, finesse and good food) thinking that south would be a little more relaxed than that northern Parisian up-tightness. I found a dozen great looking residencies and hoped that one in particular would take interest in my application. DRAWinternational is run by John and Grete. They’ve been in Caylus for 15 years working with post-grad students or artists who are looking to further their exploration of certain themes. And so I find myself in Caylus, living in the old gendarmerie, drawing.
Hey everyone, here is a selection of work completed during my artist residency at DRAWinternational, in Caylus, France, May and June 2015. These paintings are also currently on display at the Rocabella Hotel, in Santorini, Greece. You can see the poster for that show below.
