Foot Switches Aside / Dr. Device / Digital Input
Foot Switches Aside
After using the Bearcat cardboard prototype (which is to scale in two dimensions) I realized that there is no reason to use foot switches to hold values from the photocells. In fact the lack of foot switches effectively causes the user to perform unusual yet interesting gestures using their hands, forearms, and elbows to maintain the values.
Dr. Device
I am meeting with Dr. Device today (10/24) to discuss the ideas for the project and to provide him with a constructed piezoelectric microphone so he can record and create a metallic sample set (which he has offered for me to use once the set is complete).
Digital Input (Bearcat)
I had an ongoing issue where digital components (switches/buttons) were not outputting consistent values to the Arduino/MaxMSP.
I have just now realized it is a problem of resistance. In other words the lack of proper resistors for the digital inputs is the cause of the problem.
This was silly for me to overlook, however it is an easy fix and I will tackle the situation right away.
Update
I did not accomplish the goals I set out for myself.
Due to my run in with the flu I was out of commission for working on the Bearcat cardboard physical prototype.
----------
I conversed with Dr. Device via Facebook and phone about his interest in using piezoelectric components in his work. He had seen a Youtube video I made last year demonstrating how piezoelectric acoustics can be used to create unique microphones and speakers. Dr. Device is interested in using piezoelectric components to record tactile sounds for sound sets that he uses for musical composition and performance.
----------
The foot switches which have been added to the Bearcat instrument design will attach and detach using "pivot-action" components that lock and unlock the foot switches to and from the wooden board.
----------
The recovery plan:
• start working on the Bearcat cardboard prototype immediately
• upon completion of the cardboard prototype, finish editing the MaxMSP code
• document! document! document! (including sketches featuring the foot switches)
• conversate more with Dr. Device about visions for using piezoelectric acoustics
