dr dude- just wondering, but why did u choose to go to an out of state rather than a UC?
Ah sorry for taking so long! I’ve been really caught up with stuff going on in college.
Anyhow, there were a multitude of reasons of why I decided to go out of state:
I wanted to get out of California - I really wanted to leave the bubble and experience life outside of the people I’ve grown up with all my life (doesn’t mean I don’t love y’all, I just wanted a change.)
I didn’t get into a UC I was really like “I would drop everything for that school”
The computer engineering program at Maryland was better than any other school I got into.
I’m considering going into computer security after college, and being in DC would be great for that.
Yeah, I guess that’s pretty much it! I wanted to start fresh in someplace where I knew no one and where no one really went. It’s really nice to be able to just make a whole new fresh set of friends and to try and figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life with new people.
Hey all! We have decided to add short bios about ourselves so in case if you guys have more specific questions you guys can contact us directly and we can help you out. It’ll also help you guys learn more about us and what our high school lives were like.
Anyhow, onwards!
Hey everyone! My name’s Andrew Gu (-some- many of you probably also know me as Mingbo) and on here I’m known as Dr. Dude. Little Miss Sunshine was the original founder of this blog and she brought me in early on to help manage and answer questions.
I’m a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, College Park studying Computer Engineering(major) and Physics (minor). I graduated from Monta Vista in 2014.
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to pursue technology for the rest of my life, so a lot of what I did at MV was geared towards technology and its applications. I joined FBLA thanks to my sister (who was then president), Website Development (who was then looking for a Director of Technology) and CSF (who was looking for a webmaster).
Some of you may ask why I joined a business club, but FBLA still holds a special place in my heart. I competed in the technology competitions (E-Business, Web Site Design, Network Design) and it was thanks to FBLA that I started taking programming seriously. I struggled a lot when I took Java freshmen year, but after I joined FBLA I got heavily involved in web development and it’s a skill and passion that has stuck with me to this day. It’s also partially responsible for why I’m still continuing to study Computer Science in college.
Beyond school, I worked as a freelancer and interned at two tech companies. I also taught and trained in Karate on a weekly basis. Freelancing was a great way to better your skills, earn a little money, and learning life skills about how to treat others fairly while still maintaining your dignity and image. I interned at Imex Research the summer after my junior year and at MyWebRoom the summer after my senior year.
In my spare time, I absolutely love hanging out with friends and getting some food, telling jokes, programming, and sleeping.
Here’s some advice from me to you kids: Monta Vista is hard. I’m not talking about just the academics - the pressure from your parents, the pressure from your peers, the competitiveness, and just the overall atmosphere in the community. I absolutely understand it; I’m guilty of it and I know plenty of my friends who are guilty of it too. However, you can make it better. Sometimes, you just need to take a step back and think of the big picture. Who cares if you didn’t get an A on that quiz. Who cares if your friend scored 3 points higher than you and got a 100%. In the end, it’s your life and your future. Work hard and always do your best, but remember to just relax. As long as you’re happy with yourself and what you’ve achieved, that’s all that matters. Everything else will fall nicely into place.
