this is a rather older poem... but I suppose I'll share it. if you are faint of heart, perhaps this is not for you. it contains themes of dead animals and religion.
There's a dead body outside of heaven's gates
Rinsing away, my sins are no more
But there's a dead body outside heaven's door
I assume myself ready to step into this holy place
Eyes glossed over with the power of god; this creature, this disgrace
If I ignore it, will it be there no more?
It's a warning sign for sure
I can't look away from the carcass outside the door
I observe its body, still in tact
And I wonder if it is simply enjoying a peaceful nap
It speaks to me in that moment that I stare
Inviting me to come over and share
I feel it's pain, I see the light
The allure of it, this buck couldn't fight
It looks so heavy with eyes so dull
It's peaceful now, it has been lulled
His little fawns will find him in this ditch
His wounds are something they simply cannot stitch
Who will protect the darling doe
Who will watch the children grow old
From the vicious predator and foe?
Lick their wounds and make sure they're consoled?
As I make the choice to walk away
I think of the dead deer I saw that day
In the arms of God I tried to find care
But it seems death follows me everywhere.
