#DreamRoleADay challenge. Day 14 of 25. You might think these a bit "out of character" for me; but these were the "High School Musicals" my junior & senior years and I was in both. Not as either of the characters mentioned here. Two different students had that privilege. But, having always admired the original performances of Stubby Kaye...who apparently was a guaranteed show-stopper... #DreamRoleADay challenge. Day 13 of 15. #TimeAfterTime . Another favorite & personally influential, film; another two fascinating roles played by two superb actors. Accepted wisdom is, yes the hero is the main character, but the villain always gets the best lines; i.e., the better role. Writer Nicholas Meyer skillfully gives every character "best lines"...especially the primary opponents in this fantastical thriller. @malcolm_mcdowell shifts gears here to truly heroic leading man as #HGWells . (FYI, I had already researched & written a biography of Wells for a high school composition class, so, yeah: a fan). Wells best friend, Dr. John Leslie Stevenson, is played with his trademark intellectual & visceral intensity by #DavidWarner; which is key at the reveal that he is also >SPOILER ALERT!!!< #JackTheRipper . Also, time travel. So, single-season-series aside, I am ready for a remake! (Not the ambitious, logistically impressive, but ill-advised stage musical either. #DreamRoleADay challenge. Day 12 of 15. I'll be upfront...um, upfront: I've always LIKED the #StarWars franchise... but I'm honestly more a #StarTrek FAN. However, SW scored some actors who, again, fall into the #Legendary / #Iconic realm. "Saint" #PeterCushing as #GrandMoffTarkin gave at least as much gravity (no pun intended) to #ANewHope as did Sir Alec Guinness / Obi-Wan Kenobi. #BriscoCountyJr #JohnSteed #DreamRoleADay challenge. Day 9 of 15. Heroes...for a change of pace. Two of my favorite characters in the whole history of television, played by two favorite actors. The characters are deceptively simple on surface, especially as played by these unconscionably underrated actors. For context, (1)#BruceCampbell was relieved at his series cancellation; and if anyone thinks it was due strictly to the physical strain, watch an episode of Ash vs the Evil Dead...made two decades later. (2) the ambitious but ultimately flawed film remake of #TheAvengers at least had the sense to opt for acting over action by casting Ralph Fiennes; but the subtle layers of the character eluded even him. This is sort of the "Greatest Hits" of my Instagram posts: we have the forewarned return of #VincentPrice; another appearance of Diana Rigg; both of which justify a repeat of the "Legendary/Iconic" qualification for the actors & roles. Besides being prime examples of the #VincentPriceCinemaOfVengeance , these particular characters have an additional appeal for me in their motivation: Lionheart seeks recognition of & vindication for his art, while #DrPhibes extreme actions are the wholly understandable response to the loss of his true love. #DreamRoleADay challenge. Day 7 of 15. Since the precedent has already been set, ostensibly, by challenge founder @friendlikebethame with her Day 3 choice: I feel justified heading into Broadway Backwards territory at this point. That is to say, I'm not going to try playing a female character; Hairspray isn't one of my choices. But if either of these characters could be switched to male? 😁 Then, not least because: 1) it's Sondheim, duh & 2) my first exposure to each character was when they were played by Diana Rigg... IMNSHO: 1) EVERY male (& possibly female...@friendlikebethame ?) musical theatre performer wants to play Professor Harold Hill...even in the shadow of Robert Preston. 2) Every* GAY (& possibly straight) male musical theatre performer wants to be...er, play...Zaza. *I mean, of course, casting @johnscotbarrowman was a no-brainer, but when @grahnort steps in? #DreamRoleADay challenge. Day 5 of 15. A masterpiece of #FilmNoir , #Laura again takes us into that area where the role was defined by the actor. Like Tim Curry, the Day 4 star, #VincentPrice made each role his own; FYI, you'll be seeing him mentioned here later also. In the case of Clifton Webb, this part may have been written for him, but he took even that advantage to an entirely other level.
