It was such a big part of the book that they were TEENAGERS, that they were learning and that inej was abducted as a kid and was enslaveddd! That wylan was abused! and matthias indoctrinated! Every character was learning and growing cuz they were children thrust into a harsh reality but if u make them adults, the books just doesn't hit the same. Kaz being SEVENTEEN and ruling ketterdam isn't the same as him being just some guy in his twenties. For me personally all of them being my age was comforting and this just seems extremely unnecessary. WHY CAN'T AUTHORS JUST LEAVE THE LORE AS ISSS, YOU CAN ADD NEW SHIT BUT WHY WOULD YOU CHANGE PRE-EXISTING LORE.
really grateful that i bought physical copies of the six of crows books now that the new editions have all these edits bc wdym leigh bardugo removed all mentions of their ages?? for what?? its so integral to the story that they are barely adults if at all, and it makes me concerned for the novella (which i was previously rlly excited for)

Seriously considering going through my original and dregs edition copies side by side page by page line by line to make a comprehensive list of all the edits that were made so that we can have a definitive place to go to inform and educate ourselves on what exactly was changed so that we can form more complete and informed opinions and also cite our sources when making points about the situation.
Like if they’re not gonna tell us why they changed it we should at least know how they changed it and to what extent lol
I think what’s baffling about the changes to Six of Crows in the new editions (which, for those who don’t know, have removed references to the characters’ ages in an attempt to now imply they’re adults) is that there are a lot of books geared towards young adults or children that are highly regarded. The Outsiders, Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies…arguably The Hunger Games for a more contemporary example. I know people who have read these books as adults even though they never read them as kids. If these changes were actually made as a marketing decision (which we don’t know for sure) it’s a strange one. YA books that get a certain amount of acclaim attract a wider, adult audience all the time. My dad knew about Six of Crows before I got my hands on the books. He literally read Ninth House when it came out because he had heard she’s a strong YA author.
YA as a category is honestly kind of difficult to define…Percy Jackson is YA but it definitely skews a bit younger than other YA books. This is not to say Percy Jackson isn’t extremely well done and charming. It’s just that PJO definitely has topics it won’t touch on and that’s fine. It’s important for young teens to have quality books. Six of Crows on the other hand discusses addiction, sexual violence, propaganda, PTSD, and other difficult topics pretty directly. And yet…it’s still YA. The characters being so young is a big part of their stories. Not to mention teenagers can go through a lot—and understand a lot. These topics aren’t irrelevant to teens, and it would be kind of silly to say otherwise. I don’t get why someone (whether it’s the publishers or Leigh Bardugo herself) think YA is a marker of quality when it’s not.

Just returned my Six of Crows dregs edition copies because what the actual fuck were those edits.
Like I don’t know who signed off on those?? I think it was very likely her editors or publishers that made her do that but it literally just felt wrong to have them I had to return them. Their characters literally don’t make any sense as adults, not a single brain cell went into making these edits
