Dog days of August Day 12 - Drever
Happy May everyone! This month we're celebrating the Drever!
The Drever is a Swedish dog breed acquired from Germany in 1910 and crafted specifically for deer hunting. The short legs were chosen on purpose to keep the Drever near the ground for scenting and to keep them from moving too fast toward the prey, as the Roe deer they help hunt are skittish and must be approached carefully. The name was chosen by a newspaper contest in 1947 and is derived from the Swedish word 'drev' which describes the type of hunt when the prey is driven toward the hunter. These are strong, hardworking dogs, beloved by their hunting companions, and rarely found as companion pets.

Year of the Dog - Drever and Westphalian Dachsbracke “The Drever is a Swedish breed originating with the Westphalian Dachsbracke (a small hound for tracking deer), brought from Germany to Sweden around 1910, and crossbred with other hounds to adjust "to Swedish terrain and game." By the 1940s there were two distinctive sizes of the Dachsbracke, and a newspaper contest was held in 1947 to choose the new name for the slightly larger variety; Drever was chosen, from the Swedish word drev, referring to a type of hunt where the dogs drive the game towards the hunter.
Dogs of similar type are seen in very old European paintings, though the Westphalian Dachsbracke was first described as a variety of German Hound in 1886. It was recognized by the Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen (German Kennel Club) in 1935 with its current name, and by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale as breed number 100 in Group 6 (scenthounds), Section 1.3 (small hounds). The Westphalian Dachsbracke is the ancestor breed of the Swedish scenthound, the Drever. Of the major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world, only the United Kennel Club in the US recognises the Westphalian Dachsbracke, in its scenthound group. Hunting use of the Westphalian Dachsbracke has been mostly supplanted by the Drever, and the Westphalian Dachsbracke is seldom seen even in its home country; purchasers of dogs represented as Westphalian Dachsbracke should research the dog's background, especially if it is registered with one of the minor clubs that require little to no documentation before accepting a dog or litter for registration.”

The Brooner is upset he did not get any of mamas tomato-beans. He would like to discuss this great injustice. At length. #babybruno #sosmad #givehimnoms #beagle #drever #sillypuppy (at Drammen, Norway)
