Nene lore under the cut!! TW for some light mental health mentions.
Nene Tame was never a very academically intelligent girl. From childhood, she saw her peers be praised by everyone around them for their brain power and smarts, but those compliments never quite reached Nene. She had other talents that far outshone the other kids in her circle, but they were considered "useless" or "strange"- like her passion for drag racing in the streets, even from a young age.
It was always "Wow, you're so good at math!" or "You got full marks on that exam!" to her peers, but never to her. Even when she did improve her grades, she was only met with "You should have this standard all the time, not just when you want attention". It hurt Nene badly over time, and when she was 13, she vowed never to try hard in school again. She knew she was already abnormal- might as well run with it.
Around this time, Nene's father got married to Yuki Nidai, and Nene bonded quickly with her new half-brother Nekomaru. The two were attached at the hip almost instantly due to their interests, and you often didn't see one sibling without the other. Nekomaru and Nene often raced together, and Nene pursued a career in car sports while Nekomaru pursued a career in team management. Nekomaru led his half-sister to victory for the first time when they were only fourteen and fifteen!
If it wasn't for her brother, Nene would have dropped out of high school to make racing her livelihood. But after some VERY long begging sessions from Nekomaru, she begrudgingly agreed to attend Hope's Peak with him as the Ultimate Car Racer.
