As you can tell I did start to work ahead of the game about half way through the project in order to write the instructions and share with you the finished rows as they came along. Now comes the stage where you make the decisions about how to finish your quilt, and I think it’s only fair to share what I did with you. But don’t think this is the only option. You can call a halt here, layer your quilt and either hand or machine quilt and add a binding. You will then have an approx. 40” square quilt. You can add a border to the quilt of a size that you like. This might also depend on how much fabric you have to play with. I knew at a very early stage that I wanted my quilt to float on a wide background/border and to that end ordered additional fabric, which then lingered in a Chicago sorting hub for 3 months due to the postal issues related to the virus. But just as I ordered more fabric from different suppliers and started to rethink my borders, it suddenly arrived. I ordered my original fat quarter bundle of fabric from @fatquartershop and extra from @hawthornsupplyco and @themodernquilter. This meant I could continue adding a border that was cut 8.5” wide. Your width is up to you. Measure your quilt carefully, cut two strips with that measurement x the width of your choice and sew them to either side of the quilt.Measure again and repeat that step. Then later with a wadding/batting of your choice. I almost always use the Hobbs 80/20 mix and did so in this case. Then layer this with the back fabric. As I had so much fabric left I used it all on the back which worked well as my fabric is a linen/cotton mix so it was better to use that mix for the back too. You can choose whatever takes your fancy. Now it comes to tacking and before starting this step you have to decide whether you are going to hand or machine quilt.
